BMW Unveils New V8 for E93 M3

Developed with the aid of BMW's considerable Formula 1 experience, the new engine boasts a peak power output of 420 horsepower - the same amount found in rival Audi's RS4 - and 295 lb-ft of torque, increases of 77 horsepower and 33 lb-ft over the old model. With a compression ratio of 12:1, the engine redlines at a screaming 8,300 RPM, making it the highest-revving mass-production V-8 on the market, yet 251 lb-ft of torque is available at just 2,000 RPM and 85 percent of the maximum torque is available throughout the entire powerband.
Despite gaining two cylinders and more horsepower, the 445 lb engine weighs 33 lbs less than the previous M3's inline-six. The weight savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components including an aluminum-silicon crankcase, aluminum pistons, single-piece aluminum heads, and a short forged crankcase
Typical of a BMW engine, the new V-8 is loaded with high-tech features such as double VANOS valve timing, individual electronically-controlled throttle bodies, brake energy regeneration with intelligent alternator control, and the sophisticated MSS60 ECU first developed for the M5's V-10. The innovative exhaust system optimizes power output while the four catalytic converters allow the M3 to meet Euro4 and LEV2 emissions standards.
Of course, the big remaining question is how all of this power will be routed to the car's rear wheels. BMW's seven-speed SMG is the likely contender, but we won't know for sure until BMW decides to give the world yet another tease.
