rust and steel wool......

I've always used steel wool on rusty "stuff" to make it newish looking and polished. I would like to take the light rust haze off my Rally 1 center caps. Over the past few years in various other interests I have I 've heard that steel wool is bad for removing rust off of chrome. What do you guys think? If it were something cheap or easily replaceable I probably would'nt be posting this message but these things are older than I am and I don't feel like buying new ones. Thanks!
