WARNING: Thread Hijack
Actually I have been in the juror's box twice. Here is a very brief description of the cases I was involved in;
#1 A woman fought with police on her front porch. The fight escalated to the threshold of the house. Threshold was key in the case. They ended up falling into her foyer and then the living room. As the cop was on top of her trying to subdue her, she clamped down and bit his hand. Very nasty wound, all the while 2 of her young were beating the cop with brooms.
I had her guilty, her kids lied on the witness stand too, blatantly obvious. As we deliberated we had to take into account how did the cop get into the house? He fell in even though he was engaged in a fight. He arrested her inside her home with NO SEARCH WARRANT. Not Guilty. A fine line was crossed. I didn't agree with it but thats just the way it is.
#2. A college kid on the eve of his graduation was walking in the city. He was accosted by 2 guys with knives. They jumped him and stabbed him 30+ times and beat him with a pipe. One attempted to slit his throat and missed the juggler by centimeters or he would have died within minutes an expert testified. The guy put up a fight and had one guy in a headlock and as he did that the guy in the headlock was stabbing him in the back but the guy didn't let go until the guy yelled to his friend to kill him. As the guy was ready to off him a passerby in a car blew the horn and they scattered. As they ran the guy hung onto this one kids jacket and pulled it off of him.
The guy was really messed up and the pictures were horrific. So how did they get caught? In the pocket of the jacket was the one kids high school ID card.
GUILTY... those 2 are doing 80 years in on of our finer low life cell developments.
It was a really good experience for me and I learned how lawyers can manipulate the law and find loopholes to get clients off and, how the system works. Everyone should sit in a box once. I chose criminal cases to be called for I thought if I had to do it I'd want something interesting to me.
