Wow that second story.. tough guy!

I have a question about the first experience you had...

My cousin is in law school now and he was explaining something about that.
I forget what they are called, but there are always 2 sides to that kind of an arrest. For example, if cops were to tap someones phone illegally and end up hearing a call about him murdering someone, 1 side would justify that the cops had NO warrant, therefore no right to tap someones phone illegally to hear private calls, so the defendant should be found not guilty. The other side would say "you know what, who cares if its illegal.. we caught a murderer and the victims family is very pleased with the results, lock him up.
The first side is basically ok with letting a few bad guys go, as long as they are 100% not to lock up 1 innocent person. Opposite on the other side, they would rather try hard and end up not having enough evidence, which will lock up innocent people rather than risk letting a murdered go.

Was some some cat and mouse going on in that case like this?
