I'm 19, a sophomore at Clemson, and I've had my 04 M6 IBM goat for going on a month now. Not a lot of manual driving experience before then, but I feel totally comfortable driving it out now, smoked a (modded? I think I heard a BOV...) Neon SRT4 outside campus, and now I have a buddy with a Civic Si wanting to drag me. There's an 1/8 mile strip in Greer, SC about 45 minutes away, and he wants me to go there with him on a Thursday evening. He's obviously been there quite a few times, and has been driving this Civic for a while now. He's totally convinced he can take me, and I know the only thing standing in my way is total inexperience. He's also the guy that would never let me live it down or forget it if I didn't win, even if I go back the next week and the week after and walk him from then on...

I'd like to go there once on my own before I take him, but I'd also like to not go alone the first time, seeing as how this would be my first drag event. I'm just looking for some advice on how to have a successful drag day. Here's what I've gotten down:

I know pretty well how staging works- pull up and prestage consecutively, then stage consecutively. 3 lights down the Christmas tree and we're off. I've yet to do a manual burnout... is that necessary?
I can shift reliably, but haven't done a real clutch drop yet. 3500 rpms in 1st and drop the clutch on go? Would you recommend power shifting or do I even need to bother next to a 200 hp fwd car?


Don't be afraid to tell me to wait a little while longer. Optimistically I'd hope to find someone there that would recognize a novice and help me out, but I think to some extent someone rolling up with an LS1 should know what they're doing.

Then again, I know a girl that works at MIR during the summers, knows her way around a drag strip... It was about 90F (hot and humid) so i didnt expect to get personal best times but just to have fun.

Here is what i was running consistently:

1.865 / 8.2@85 / 12.938@105
1.880 / 8.3@85 / 12.945@105
1.945 / 8.4@85.5 / 13.005@105.50

This was all on street tires. I will have nitto drag radials for winter runs (usually able to pull 1.65 on nittos) and then hopefully cold air will get me to 12.2-12.4 range at about 110+ mph.


My old 98 Trans Am was running 0.5-0.8 sec and 4-5mph faster in winter (60F) comparing to summer (90F + humid)

I was happy just to break 12s in yesterdays heat, but i am looking for sub 12.5 time slip this winter. 60ft improvement with nitto + cold air will most likely put me there. :cheers

But either way, it was fun getting some runs in.

Other thing is my mph was kind of low. I will have to get this car re-tuned since last tunner tunned it more on conservative side and he was not best at it. (but i had to get it done just to use this car for daily driver until i get to better more experience tunner)

1st run. Launched at 2500rpm ... Traction control and missed 4th ... 14.8 1/4
2nd run. Launched at 2500rpm ... Wheel hopped ... 14.5 1/4
3rd run. Launched at 3000rpm and let the clutch slip a little to avoid the wheel hop. ... missed 4th again ... 14.1 Trap Speed of 88mph lol (i coasted)

Good news is i now i can hit 13s. i just need to learn how to drive my GTO lol. Only had i for a month now. I come from front wheel drive 4cyl cars. We took it all the way up to 130 when I shut it down. When I looked back he was about 7 or 8 cars back and he just slowed down and turned into a development. I noticed on his windshield he had a sticker that said "Thunder Racing". :lol: I kind of put him in his place :cool
