65 389 or not?

can anyone tell me if 049794yf can be a 65 389 GTO engine. Casting # on the rear of the block near the distributor hole is 9778789? also. will all GTO optioned cars begin with 237 in '65 or is 235 a valid vin beginning for GTO optioned cars?

That casting number was used for the 389 in 65 and 66, the letter code YF is for a 1965 389 with 325 hp, Auto 4bbl and AC. More than likely the engine was for a b-body full size pontiac. The GTO's only offer the 389 with 335 and 360 hp.

In 65 GTO's were 237 cars, 235 is for Tempest. The 65 237 cars built in the Kansas City and the Pontiac Plants will include the code 5N on the data plate identifying them as having the GTO option. The cars built in Baltimore and Freemont can only be verified with the PHS report.

1965 GTO option 389 codes will be WT or WS for manual 335 or 360 hp
YS or YR for Automatics

It is a replacement block. Is the casting date at least approximate to your build date? I've not done it myself, but if you have a numbers matching motor that is plausible to your car's build date, there might be some value in looking into having the code on the replacement block restamped to one of the above codes. I know a lot of Vette guys that have gone that route.

Your reaction is understandable, but like it or not, it is a fact of life and is increasingly accepted with restoration circles. If you read my response, I said I've never done it. Personally I disagree with it, but I'd get more upset about restamping VINs on a block (also a increasingly common event), than to change a correct dated motor from a YF to a YS. The forum is about exchanging ideas and this might be a viable option for someone in this fellow's position. No one is making you do it and no one is asking you buy it.

Thanks so much for your response though.
