I'm pulling off my 65 Pontiac LeMans 2 barrel and installing a 66 tripower on my engine I have a 2 speed ST300 transmission automatic is it necessary to hook the kickdown switch backup it's activated by open throttle linkage
Any input would be appreciated thank you
My brother had a Buick GS-400 with that trans. The internal governor determines the speeds for upshifts and downshifts when slowing down. The kickdown switch is primarily to give you a downshift when you floor it (below a certain speed) giving you what in the good old days was called "passing gear". My brother has had the switches go bad and not replaced them. The only thing is that if you want the "low" gear for passing, you'll have to manually downshift and then upshift again. Depending on your car speed and engine rpm, the governor may or may not let you do this (to prevent over-revving).
