They are close in numbers, however I believe the 99 - 01 Cobra will still beat the Mach 1 convincinlgly enough.
I thought Mach 1s were faster. They have been able to run 13.1s in bone stock in the 1/4 while 99 and 01 cobras were around mid 13s bone stock in the 1/4. 03-04 cobras are able to run 12.90s or faster bone stock in the 1/4, there animals. I used to be big on mustangs. I have owned a 99 cobra, an 01 cobra, an 03 cobra convertible for a short time and 2 supercharged mustang GTs, one was a stick and the other an automatic.
Mach 1's and '99-01 Cobra's are a driver's race. They are virtually identical in terms of weight, power, etc.
The 03-04 Cobra's are capable of bettering 12.90's w/ a good driver, though. Those things are beasts. My next car is most definitely going to be a Terminator......

I am never going to sell my GTO but in a 3-5 years when I save up some money I'd like to put one next to my GTO in the garage
Also your right it is a drivers race, but the Mach 1 has a slight advantage having 3.55 gear ratio while the 99 and 01 cobras have 3.27 gear ratio

Here are the specs. To be honest, I wouldn't entertain beating a 99 - 01 SVT Cobra in a stock Mach I. Let me say again, stock for stock; 99 - 01 Cobra for the win everytime.

I have a couple issues here. The first is rated hp means nothing. I had a 2002 Camaro Z28 that was rated at 310 hp at the flywheel. It put more than that to the ground stock. Basically what I'm saying is that just because the Mach is rated lower doesn't mean it puts less to the ground. Ford may have done what GM did and rated it less to save face for the guys that spent more than the Mach on a Cobra. GM rated the Camaro at 310 so the guys spending double the Z28 price on a C5 felt they got something for that extra money beyond a nicer car with superior handling. Reality is manufacturers play with ratings, they aren't the real world.
Your Cobra is a perfect example. It puts well over 360hp to the wheels, and some good ones have hit 380 to the wheels stock. The 360 number should have put it rated at 425hp and the 380 number was 450hp flywheel. Ford, probably because of the debacle it got itself into with the 99 320hp Cobra that only really made 285-290 flywheel hp, decided to rate it consevatively at 390.
Second issue. Even if the Mach does make 15 hp less, the weights are about the same and it has the 3.55 gears instead of the Cobras 3.27 gears. This is just bench racing, but here goes. You have an engine that makes power up top like the 4v 4.6. It needs revs plain and simple. I'd give up 10-15 hp (5%) in a car that has equal weight to get 10% better gearing. Then throw in the advantage of a lower torque peak to the Mach as icing on the cake.
I've raced the Mach and I've raced 99 and 01 Cobras. I've raced them with my Z28 and with my GTO. I've watched them race many times too. I was an active member of SVTOA from 98- 03 when I had my Contour SVT and saw the cars at the track as part of that. From what I've seen at the track and experienced from a lot of races against each car, the Mach scared me more than a 99/01 Cobra. The Cobra was usually .2 slower than a Mach.
