"Reverse" kill against a phart-canned Honda

So my wife and I were on our way home from meeting my brother and his family for some ice cream, when I see black Honda Civic, lowered, winged, and an obnoxously LOUD phart can, cruising a couple of cars ahead of us. Sounded like hornets in a coffee can.

We make our way up to him, not looking for a race. Besides, I already saw the state trooper cruising behind me, following us out of town a couple of cars back.

We exchange possitions a couple of times, but generally maintain the speed limit. However he keeps goosing the accelerator, the phart can, well, pharting...

The road we're on is notorious for radar in a number of spots until this long downhill stretch. We crest the hill and he notices there are no cops taking radar. What he still doesn't realize is that there's a trooper cruising behind us.

So he guns it.

I maintain...

I figure he was probably 100+ when the trooper got him.

My wife waved and smiled as we cruised by...

One of the few times I'm happy I lost a "race", heh!

Yeah, and Va. Troopers don't screw around. Loose your license, car impounded immediately. 20 over is considered wreckless...

Wow, I didn't realize they were that bad here in VA. My wife and I just moved here a couple of months ago from NC and I heard some stories about the cops up here, but I didn't think it was that strict. I just got an '06 CGM M6 and love it. Now I'm a little scared to get on the throttle around here. I have seen a lot of cops too since the move. I guess I'll just have to wait till I'm out of state to have most of the fun.

Hey, man! I'm just a bit west of Warrenton -- straight down Rt. 15 from you. I'll keep an eye out for ya the next time I'm in Leesburg.

As far as having fun, there is always Summit Point race track just over the line from you in WV. Great road course, though a bit expensive to get some track time.

For drag races, there's the 1/8 mile track in Summerduck (yep, that's the name of the village...) just southeast of me, and the 1/4 mile track in Bud's Creek, Md.

Great story! I wonder if he'll be claiming that as a victory.

I just don't get the appeal/purpose of fart can mufflers. I've never understood what their purpose is, and I still don't. Anything I saw posted on rice message boards or modified econo car message boards didn't make any sense--like I've seen a few claims that a fart tip on their muffler "increases HP". Um yeah, if that were true, why don't you see them on Corvettes, Porsches, Ferraris, etc? Why are they almost exclusively installed on 4cyl econo cars and a few 6cyl Mustangs and F-bodys?

I don't see where the noise is appealing either. I guess the only things I can think of that make any sense are:
1) In some cases, the car sounds like a small motorcycle. Maybe they think they can trick people into thinking, "Hey, a motorcycle. I like motorcycles. Let me look...aw drat. A crappy Civic. Foiled again!"
2) Maybe they just want to make a lot of noise because it gets them some attention (attention as in people look up at the car to see what on earth is making that racket). Never mind that most of the attention is negative--there are those that feel that negative attention is better than no attention.

I think #2 is probably closest to the truth from what I've seen so far. There are so many I see who put in loud stereos, neons, flashy vinyl decals, body kits, huge honkin wings, fart cans etc and don't do anything more to the engine than maybe a CAI, that it seems to me it is about calling attention to yourself.. but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just too old to get it

/edit: Argh! I guess I kinda got a bit off topic.

Maybe the purpose of the loud exhaust is to let you know they are there. You know like the motocycle sticker that says loud pipes save lives.

What is it about ricers who want to race in really stupid places? I get the "look" in heavy freeway traffic, around busy shopping malls and once even outside an elementary school when there were kids about.

Sure, I might have some fun when the road's clear, I don't have the kids in the car and the weather and visibilty are good, but I'm not going to put other people at risk just to satisfy my auto-ego.

Rice-boy might be able to drive; I've been doing it along time and hope I can after 30-something years and the best part of 700,000 miles, but what about granny in the SUV that rice-boy just cut off when changing lanes to get across four lanes in one move? Her false teeth are probably still in the footwell
