Strange encounter w/ 383 'stroker' truck

I was on my way home from work travelling on a very 'patroled' road before 7:00 A:M this morning.

Just...taking my time when I see a jacked up late 80's chevy truck fastly approaching from behind. Its jacked up to high heaven, about as loud as an F-15 fighter jet.

He slows down & paces me to bait me...then revs out, & screams right past me.

I do not take the bait, ..but it DID provoke me some.He was slowed by the traffic light ahead, & I keep at my same speed & meet him at the light, & yell out the window, "If the road ahead was not under construction, & in only one lane I'd gladly play with you" etc.

He tells me my 05' GTO is "sharp looking, ..but that he doesn't think they are as good as whats been reported about them''.

He lets me proceed through the one lane road first, until we get past the construction area, & the two lanes re-appear again.

I slow down & wait for him,. but to be honest, I do not know 'what' to expect...other than an outrageous screaming from his engine, & now we are off to play a 'little'.

I'm pulling hard in first, & in second but I could not get WAY ahead of him, but seem to be holding my own, & am still ahead of him by about a car length after about 200 yards..

but now it appears that this guy is getting very 'wreckless' in a 35 MPH speed zone, & ITS NOW GETTNG TO DANGEROUS speeds.

I back off the accelerator, & just let him pass me by as this road is well patroled by the police, ..especially in the mornings as I have often seen them as I regularilly take this route home from work.

Yeah, ..it IS known as a high speed area for aggressive drivers.

I eventually come to the corner, & spot the guy at the corner gas station, & I pull in to talk to him.

He says that he has a 383 stroker in his old 86' chevy truck. I have no clue if he's telling the truth or not,.. but for a truck it sure as hell could move, & its rev sound was almost ear shattering.

He tells me again, ''Your car sure is sharp, ..but I didn't think you really had a chance etc etc". Talk about arrogant condenscension, ..jeeze??

I replied that "I was NOT conceding 'ANYTHING'...& that I simply "quit" on my own because it was getting TOO damn dangerous".

I have no clue as to 'whether' or not I could have continued to keep my small lead on this guy had I continued to race with him, ..BUT I was not willing to risk life, limb, & ticket..or put others in harms way just to find out.

I guess I'll never know IF the guy was telling the truth about having a 383 stroker under his hood?

Either way, ..I was pleased with the fact that my 05' GTO was not served up to him for the time that we were 'engaged'; ..but he had one fast, obnoxiously loud thunderous sounding truck.

If he stayed with you for that long, chances are he does have some engine work done. The weight of his truck with his stock set-up would made him like a boat anchor compared to you're acceleration. Besides, what do you have to prove to someone about the GOAT anyways. Just tell the guy to go test drive one and see for himself!

Even with a built motor its a tall brick, off the line that doesnt hurt him at all and he probably has some huge gears to go with the big tires however the faster you went the more the aerodynamics would start to slow him down,if you already had a lead theres no way he would have caught you. On a lifted truck he would need a WHOLE lot more than a 383 to stay with a GTO on the top end. Something like a jet turbine..

You ran him in his strong spot. He held with you and that was it. anything over 60-70 and he was toast.

As others have said, he obviously has mods, engine swap, rebuild, or something non-stock in there--a late 80's stock truck would have had fairly pathetic output compared with today's vehicles. And he would have to massively out-HP/TQ you to beat you in a race, due to his weight and being jacked up etc .

Honestly I would be scared to drive a highly jacked up truck at very fast speeds. There is less margin for error in a vehicle like that than in a car, and even in a car there isn't much margin at high speeds.

It was good that you backed off, and it sounds like he was talking trash.

The only bad thing is that you played with him a little (this is just my opinion). I think if you would have never "bit", it would have been harder for him to talk trash. Of course, the opponent will very often make up some sort of justification, even if it is untrue. If you hadn't bitten, he could have said "You're too scared to race because you know I'd win" or some such crap. But I think it would have been harder in his own mind to justify it--if he is being truthful to himself--had you not given him a go. Again, this isn't criticizing you in any way, just discussing, and tossing out my opinion on the other guy's possible reactions.

Don'tbet on that there are tons of options that a big engine can do in truck. My brother and I have an S10 blazer with a 489 stroker that runs in the low 10's high 9's. We saw a jack up silverado on Super swamppers turn a 13.8 at 106 with a big block and a s/c so it is possible but trust me it cost a lot to make a truck go fast we spent over 20K. I don't want to know what he spent to turn that time in a truck like that.Just my .02

some guy who is all over the net with a silverado who runs it in 4wd has nitros and turbo, there is another one that has 1000hp in it and they're 6.0L engines. i've seen the videos too....

there are syclones and typhoons old skool s10's that will run 11's.... 13's from the factory and that was over 10 years ago, lol.

as far as the s-10 goes, I wouldn't consider that a big truck. cyclones and typhoons are all wheel drive 3.8L turbos. just like the Grand National. big trucks however, such as the Silverado, can take a GTO in a quarter with a few mods, but none of the above, no matter what you do to it, will hang with a GTO past 3rd gear or a rolling start. If you can't pull a 13.2 in the 1/4 mile, an f-150 lightening with minor exhaust mods will take you.

My father-in-law has a '62 Chevy tha thas a built 4-bolt main 350 with around 575HP. We ran from a red light and 1st through 3rd we were fender to fender. As soon as I hit 4th I started pulling. The downfall, he only has a turbo 350 tranny so his 4.11 gears only lets him top out at around 120mph. His truck was built for the 1/8 mile or should I say, red light to red light!

Here's some pics. The thing sounds really nasty; loud exhaust and big cam.
