Looking to buy & found a possible good buy?

I have been looking for a GTO for about 3 weeks strong now and I found one that is about 10 miles away from me, but I had a few questions. First of all, here is the car:

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

I wanted to find a Black 6-Speed with 18" Stock wheels and mods such as headers, exhaust, and a cam. I decided to try and find one like this because I realize how expensive the mods can be by looking on this forum and by putting about $8,000 into my S-10. The car here is red; not a color I want nor would like to keep and I do not really like the wheels all that much.

My question is this:

Would it be wise to snatch this car up and hopefully get him down $3,000 on the price and then paint it my preferred color and buy some used stock 18" wheels (If not ask him if he still has them setting around)?

My logic is that if I were to buy this, my expenses would go towards painting it and putting on different wheels rather than exhaust, intake, headers, and such.

The only other downfall is the fact that I was wanting a SLP LM1 instead of a corsa. Is the difference between these two going to be minuscule?

I guess we all different, there is no way I would buy a car this new and then paint it another color. You just killed the resale on it unless you plan to drive it forever then I guess it wouldn't matter. I don't buy anything myself with the intention of keeping it forever.

I was unaware that painting it affected the resale value this much. I do plan to keep the car for at least 4-5 years however. By then, I won't really care too much what it goes for.

Thats just a little overpriced. Considering his mods, If you can walk out with it for lets say.... 21-22k then thats not such a bad deal. Personally I think the car looks really good! Hes got lots of extra goodies in the car waiting for you. LM1 is about the loudest one you can get out there.. but I reallly like the Corsa Sport. Brand new its very expensive so.. I would call this guy up and ask him a bit.. check out the car in person, maybe a test drive. Youll like it!! If you ONLY want black.. then just look for another one I'd say. Not worth painting a car right after you buy it.. especially if it still looks brand new. Just my opinion. Goodluck

You are kidding, right? You are willing to throw over 20K out the window for 4-5 years of driving? Get the color you wand and mod it yourself. You really don't want to buy someone elses hot rod. Changing colors is much more trouble than it is worth.

That is what I was thinking about the price as well. He just seems as if he is trying to find that one guy that will pay for the car+the mods he has done on top of it, which is understandable considering it is a modified muscle car rather than a Geo, but I would walk away unless I could take it for $21,000 to be honest. I wanted Brazen or Black badly, because I told myself I would get black last time ans ended up with white. I know it is absurd, but I am strongly considering painting the thing. If it was grey or spice red, I might reconsider, but red doesn't appeal to me much (nor the cops). I am interested in finding out what I decent paint job would run me however, because I know it can't be anywhere near the cost of all his modifications. I'm getting impatient and really do need to get a car that gets better mileage. My truck is averaging me about 12 right now and gas isn't going to stop rising. I'd rather have something fun to drive if my mileage is going to be lower.

Of course I say that I'm going to keep the car forever when I buy it, but I'm trying to be realistic about things. I would say that there is a 70% chance I will keep the thing for more than 15 years, but you never know. If I modify it heavily, I will have a harder time putting it up for sale, so this is a good thing. Not to mention, this car is very rare and I love that.
