Not smooth when turning the ignition key

I noticed that when I turn the ignition key I hear a couple of clicks and it takes a little more pressure when turning the key. I was wondering if spraying the keyhole (small amount) with WD-40 or Silicon Spray would be OK and won't damage anything.
Any suggestions on what works best or what should not be used? (WD-40, Silicon Spray, etc..?)

Thanks,
PatNJ

Try some fine graphite powder. The graphite bonds to the metal workings. It's excellent for lock mechanisms. You could also use Graphite aerosol.

If there is dirt in there the graphite aerosol or powder will adhere to the metal workings. It is excellent in dirty dusty conditions. The graphite is an oil free lubrication.

There have been issues with the lock cyl freezing up. Talk to your dealer they have been replacing them.

Blow out with wd 40 and compressed air and you'll have have a bunch of black stuff come out then lubricate.

It is not wise to be putting 3 in 1 oils WD-40 or other liquid lubricants in there. All that will do is attract more dirt, lint, etc. The gunk will really collect in there and eventually you may have a really gummy problem. Blowing it out with compressed air may get some out but the wet goo will stick to the insides and build up. Not only that it will become an ongoing maintenance issue because it will attract more dirt at a faster pace. Graphite is the way to go, it's a dry lube and like teflon, bonds to the metal and reduces friction while not attracting the dirt and debris liquid lubricants do.

Thanks guys. I didn't think think it was a good Idea to spray a wet lubricant in the key hole.
Now before I start calling 10 different stores where can I buy the graphite powder? Or do i have to go online?

Pep Boys?
Napa Auto Parts?
Wal-mart?

You may want to try a hardware store.

perhaps Wal-Mart but I have seen it at place like Ace HArdware and True Value, etc...usually wherever they cut keys or have locks for sale...good luck.
