My 2004 Pontiac GTO is currently experiencing starting problems. Sometimes it starts fine and sometimes it just clicks only ONCE and is quiet. I am in the process of trouble shooting the problem and figure start at the battery so I pulled it and brought it to the local pep boys and they said its fine. Can this problem be the starter? Are there any known problems like this and if it is the starter is there a machine to test to tell me so?
Could be a starter. Pepboys certain there is enough juice in the battery to turn the engine over? There are places that can test the starter but you may have to take it out of the car. If it is a starter, check places in your area that can rebuild it rather than buy new or after market.

I was thinking the same thing. Some of those professors they have working there will put a tester on it and if it reads 12-14 volts it's fine but as soon as you put a load on it, it dies.
Do the new GTOs use a starter relay? If so, maybe swap it out with another relay to see if it gets better? How about neutral safety switch? Did you try to put the shifter into neutral and hit the starter when it wouldn`t start for you?
Here's my thoughts. You are afraid of buying a battery and it not being the cause of the problem. Well you have a 4 year old car with the original battery. From this point forward you are on borrowed time with it anyhow. Sometime in the next year or so it's going to die and leave you stranded. Start with the battery and replace it. Keeping the old battery is just putting strain on the charging system and could end causing you to need an alternator.
Go fet an Opitma Gel battery. They are expensive, but will get you 6 good years instead of 4.
If you replace the battery and the problem keeps occuring, look to the starter. Also clean all your contacts on the grounds and such. After 4 years and a boat ride across salt water they probably need it.
