Hey guys...so I bought my 06 GTO about 2 weeks ago, and was driving it to the parents place for the holidays, and of course end up running over a truck tire. There is rubber (from the tire running through the wheel well) and on the side of the car where the end of the tire flapped and hit the car. Any suggestions on how to get the rubber off the paint?...cant get it with my finger nail in the wheel well. So pissed! Drive a Cavalier as a daily driver (have to travel alot for my job) and never had anything like that happen...in the GTO for 30 miles and of course run over a truck tire. Crazy too...driving in a straight line at 65 see nothing, just heard it and felt it...somehow ran over with my rear passenger tire...someone driving next to me must have ran over it and sent it to my lane...oh well...any ideas on getting that off the paint?? Thanks guys!
Yeah it sucked!...It put a small hole in the tire...so pulled off changed it put the donut on drive back 45 min to my place and drove the Cavalier down...Product you recommend? Another buddy of mine said to use lighter fluid...any thoughts on that?
Try a petroleum based car wax. You can try acetone as well. Acetone is the ingredient in nail polish that removes it.
If it is really hardened on, try heating it up with a hair drier and when it's pliable saturate the area with WD-40 then wipe with it off with a cotton cloth. NO WD-40 will not harm the paint, it's a good bug removal aid as well.
Try using a good quality bug and tar remover, then clean the area with a car wash soap and if necessary use a clay bar as well and wash it again. That should take care of it, it worked for me when I got tar on my paint from driving over a newly paved road. Good luck.
I really appreciate all the input guys...I'll definitely try one or a combo of these...at the folks place for a week, but as soon as I'm back I’m going to try to get this taken care of...quite the start to the holidays...hoping it didn't scratch or dent it…will only know when I can get the rubber off
The WD40 trick works real well. The suggestion to clay bar after the removing it is good too.
I've used WD40 to get all sorts of things off the paint of cars. It works to get dried on ketchup and mayonaise off of cars. Someone ran over a ketchup and mayonaise packet in a fast food parking lot. I didn't find it till the next day and 100 degree heat had baked it onto my car. It works great on bugs. I spray my wheel wells with WD40 and the rear quarter panel before I go drag racing. Almost no VHT or rubber sticks inside the wheel well and what does rinses off with a low pressure hose. Also for those in the south, it takes love bugs off real well too.
I've had my cars in car shows too. What you do is pull your wheels and WD40 the wheel well. It gives a nice sheen to the wheel well. Then I coat the inside of the wheel rim with WD40 and when I get to the show wipe it off. No brake dust, no dirt, nothing sticks to it.
That WD-40 is a wonder ain't it Ferg? I've been using that on cars forever it seems. Sticky residue from stickers on paint to glass comes right off. Few squirts in a door lock and it won't freeze up in the winter. I've read where people spray their Satellite dishes with it before a snow storm so the snow won't stick to it causing possible distortion.
I've used it many times on snow shovels to keep the snow from caking up on it. Good trick spraying it on wheel wells so the rubber won't latch on to the car. Most everyone has WD-40 or other brands in their shop, it's cheaper to use them than buying Tarminator or other bug cleaners.
