Sales Tax (Buying out of State)

I just purchased a 2005 GTO in Iowa. The owner said in Iowa there is no sales tax when selling between individuals. There isn't a spot on the title that indicates the sale price.

I live in St. Louis and haven't taken the title to the DMV yet. Before I go I wanted to know since there isn't a sale price in the title if I would have to pay taxes?

Here's a picture of the car...3,706 miles on the ODO when I picked it up.

Thanks!

I think when you go to register the car they will ask you your buying price. Here in Wisconsin the DMV has been known to contact the seller and confirm the selling price to be sure the new owner isn't fudging on the price to reduce the taxes.

Nice car- It depends on the state- In Illinois they tax you based on the year, but then if they think it is worth more than the years taxes would allow, they tax you based on the purchase price- Check with a local currency exchange. That's how I did it, I called them, they told me the rules, and most will work with you and give you the taxing brackets based on the amount you paid. They don't care if you lie, but I'd get on the same page with the seller- It's very stupid that they collect taxes twice on the vehicle, but that's the way it is- at least here in Illinois.
