shameful event with my GTO

My DD (97grand voyager) got a flat and due to the tire size 205-74-14 they are not a popular size and will not be in till friday afternoon. As of monday I have been driving my GTO and on tuesday, the rear brakes started grinding. I was unable to change the pads due to work and my hours of work. Finally today was my day off and I had a 15 mins in my friends garage to do the brake job (shop closes at 5:00). I bought the cheapest Advance auto pads $21.00 which were in stock as of 3:00 pm they had to order them for me and drive 45 miles to get them. I did the job in 20 minutes. The driver side rear rotor had some scrapes and scuffing on the inboard as the inner pad was completely warnout. I just threw the pads on and took the car for a ride and I could not believe the difference in braking performance. The car stops on a dime. One tap of the brakes and it stop extremely well. I know lots of guys here buy slotted rotors and really good brake pads. I plan on doing the brakes over again in the spring when I have time. I will replace the 2 rotors and I intend on getting the better pads all the way around from advanced auto. Has anyone really noticed an improvement in braking buying slotted rotors or waht ever rotors other than stock and better brake pads. ----Thanks ---danfigg

I thought the brakes were great on my Cavalier, pulled the emergency brake went to the top, backs totally out of adjustment. Backs are 40% of your brakes, just means your fronts are good. With good rear brakes the whole car will go down, instead of nosing over when you hit them. Brakes aren't really tested til they do something wrong, or you are in competition.

And here I was thinking you got pulled over for street racing with a title like that... Haha. Bumping this. I'm curious about rotors as well. I've got my eyes on some EBC slotted and dimpled rotors. Runs about $600-$700 (front and back together) depending where you shop.

re

No i didnt get pull over I just feel like I skimpt on parts for my GTO by slapping cheapo pads on rotors that got scuffed up. Then after getting the brakes working, I realized how good they are working. As stated before by spring time I will do the job right with new rotors and pads. Now I have time to research and find out if stock pad and rotors are good enough or go with high performance stuff----Danfigg

Dimpled and slotted rotors won't much difference on a street car. They have some use on things like auto-cross where you're on the brakes constantly and heat is a real issue. On the street they're done mostly for the "race" look. Pads on the other hand can make quite a difference. I use ceramic mostly because they don't dust as badly. Get C5 Corvette pads for the fronts. The fronts do 80% of the braking and the C5 pads are a little larger and fit perfectly on LS2 GTO brakes (I upgraded my '04 to '05 brakes). BTW the rears are the same on all years

I've had my eye on the EBC Red Stuff ones. THey're more for stuff like Autocross like you said, Svede, but I figure why not? I'd rather pay extra for extra performance and KNOW that sucker's gonna stop when I say. Though that info on the brake pads and brakes is good stuff. I imagine I could change my front brakes to '05-'06 as well for not too much if I find them from anything other than the dealer, since Hawaii jacks their prices regardless of what it is... Or are they not so bad? (before I go and check google, haha)
