GTO was an older Holden/Vauxhaul/Opel desinged car...it was massaged to be sold to us here in the states as the GTO...everything comes down to money and the dual one sided exhaust was not deemed worth spending the money on in 2004...LS1 is a great engine and the first of all the LS engine family...shouldn't be hard to get more HP with bolt ons...works for the C5 Corvette bunch...

of corse you can get 400hp out of an LS1. my fiance has a 99 camaro ( i know its not a GTO) and its an LS1, pushing well over 400hp. his car is actually the reason i got into the gm family. but again, its entirely up to you on which motor ud rather have. either way, you wont be disapointed with either one.

I would go for it. The Ls2 is the route you want to go but Ls1 is no slow poke either.

I used to be in the tuner cars also. I had a Honda Civic Si with a b18 gsr and Greddy turbo. With everything I was pushing about 320 fwhp. I test drove my current 06 GTO with the LS2 and it blew my mind. you figure a stock 05-06 GTO goes for around 25k and is KBB at 27k I believe. In 10 years these GTO's will be worth double if not more in my opinion. Everyone on this site from what I have seen would rather have a GTO than a Mustang haha.. Take your time and look around. I finally found mine after looking for about 4 months. Do your research and you can learn a bunch, especially from from everyone on this site. Good luck on your search and hopefully we will see a GTO pic here soon!

Why? Maybe you would have held out for an `06 or what?
