GTI owner looking to change the vowel in my cars name...

Howdy all,

I currently have a 2006 GTI and it is quite a fantastic car but recently I got to drive a S197 Mustang and I remembered just how fun a RWD V8 manual car can be.

I have an 11 month old so back seat room is an issue and I'd like to hear what you all think about using a GTO as a DD car to get me to work and my child to day care.

Since I've yet to drive a GTO, I can't tell you what I like/dislike specifically about the GTO except the following:

PROS:
400 hp....um yea. That's pretty much why I'm in this forum now.
RWD...um yea. That's pretty much why I want out of my GTI (if at all).
very nice interior-miles ahead of the S197 imho and easily as nice as my car, with the GTO leather a much higher quality from what I've seen.

CONS:
Gas mileage
Slow seat access to the back
no standard Satellite radio
heated seats? I'd miss 'em if they were absent
no HID headlights

Anyways, here's my current car and my co-pilot.

You have a nice car. I have a relative who has a new black GTI....I have a 9month old and a 4 year old.. Actually getting the kids in and out is not bad....The infant seat was a little difficult putting in and out...I use to buckle him in the portable infant seat and pass it between the two front seats and into the base....Now that he is 20lbs I have the regular stationary car seat in the goat...I could not turn it so that it faced backwards or I would have to put the passenger side front seat up close to the dash...I put it facing forward even though he does not turn one year until two months from now. Getting him in and out is alot easier now..I just use the button on the top of the seat..and then lean in and put him in. My girl uses a booster seat which just straps in using the seat belt. She likes pushing the forward seat button and climbs right in. Ofcourse I have those seat protectors for both car seats so that they dont dig into the leather...My little girl is even trained to kick off her shoes so she does not kick the back of my seat..... I dont use mine as a daily driver but when the kids to get in it.....really, its not bad....

Wow- that interior bad as#. Your kid has the bluest eyes I have ever seen.

Cons of the Goat; gas, all else is pure Heaven…Buy one and spank all others.

Heated seats in the Bay Area - no need Dude…

Hehe very cute baby and VERY nice car! I knew they were nice from the outside but I had yet to see the interior! Awesome, one of the best in my book!

As for the GTO cons you listed.

City gas mileage isnt so great, for me highway is getting excellent gas!
Slow access to the rear... hmm yea but if thats a problem them dont look through the 2004's, they actually made the seat motor faster after 2004.
No satellite.. yea but the engine is music to my ears! Especailly to yours since you havent been driving a V8 a while.
I dont think any GTO's came with heated seats, but I could be wrong.
HID's.. I wish, but I have seen people put them aftermarket, and it looks absolutely gorgeous!

Now let me add a few pros for the GTO other than the ones you listed.

Your getting a very Rare car. Most people here and LS1gto.com post it up when they see another GTO, in hopes of getting a response!
Although it takes a few seconds to get in the back, the GTO is known to have some of the most legroom, comfort, and safety in the rear, oh and the rears are bucket seats aswell.
Right now GTO's are at its lowest prices, you can find a nice low mileage one for almost half the price it will be soon!
Your getting a car with 400 hp/tq, and most wouldnt expect an interior of this quality in a car with so much power.

All in all, if your looking for a sport car with enough power to eat up animals, and some small children on the streets, yet you want a safe, reliable interior... GTO is the bang for the buck in your case! Keep us updated and goodluck!

Don't tempt me to make a road trip!

Thanks for the great replies....sounds like a terrific forum. HOPEFULLY I can get together a nice little down payment so make this more than just a dream.

I appreciate all the comment on my son, AJ and on my car.

The GTI really is a superb little front driver and honestly I'd be sad to see it go. For the money they are almost impossible to beat for frugality, utility and fun.

I didn't always own VWs. My last V8 car was this 1992 Z28. While not nearly as fast (even my GTI is probably faster) the sound was amazing for a 5 litre TPI engine.

I went through this dilemma too. I have an 06 Pontiac G6 GTP. It is very comfortable to drive and has a good bit more interior options then the GTO, kind of like your VW. It has satellite radio and heated seats and a few other goodies.

Well I went and bought one last week and I kept the G6 as well. I love it. If you think the test drive is awesome, just wait till you can take it out and really play with it. When you drive it you will notice that it is a very solid car all around. It just feels tough and safe at the same time. In a way I feel safer with a crazy faster car. If that makes sense. And the looks you get in a GTO, ohh man. My G6 is not a bad looking car, and I added some things to it to attract more looks to it, but I get tones more looks when I am in my plain jane 04 GTO in one drive then in a whole week of driving the G6. Makes you feel like a rock star.

Anyway, in one week I put over 300 mile on the GTO and 24 miles on the G6 and I am beginning to wonder why I even have the G6 anymore. Who cares about the heated seats and the satellite radio. With a couple of hundred dollars you can get both of them for the GTO on Ebay. The fuel mileage is worse, but that give you an excuse to upgrade it a little.

Go for it, you will love it.

You can add any color HID's yourself for under 150-

Can't beat the V8 sound or feel!

I still have the same 6 cd's loaded from March-I never listen to them because the engine/exhaust sound is better.
