Broken Rotor...

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Here's the scenario: Tooling down I-65, about 68 mph, talking with my son, when suddenly the goat starts sputtering and loses power in a flash ... I pull over to the shoulder .. and, of course, the old girl instantly overheats ... we wait for it to cool down. I figured that it just overheated, and that I didn't see the temp light because I was engaged in convo with my son... Well, we cool her down, and try to start her, and nothing ...It JUST wasn't getting any spark ... so I investigate further .. I pulled the distributor cap and saw the rotor contact at about a 60 degree angle ... THAT'S NOT GOOD! ... About this time, a guy pulls up alongside us to see if we need help ... He had some JB Weld, so I straightened out the contact and epoxied it into place. After allowing the epoxy to set, I reinstalled the rotor and then tried to start the goat ... NOTHING ... not catching at all ...

Wel, long story short, I paid lots of money to have the goat towed back to my home ...stewed over the problem overnight ... and within 15 minutes on Sunday, had her running GREAT ...

You see, when the rotor broke, The trailing holding tab had broken off, allowing the contactor to slip. Additionally, the broken plastic(melamine) piece apparently had wedged itself inbetween the rotor and cap, causing the whole distributor to rotate approx 60 degrees. The only thing that kept it from rotating further was the number 3 plug wire ...

my 2 cents ...
