Bushings

Hey guys I've been working on my 67 GTO for about a year and a half now. This is my first classic. I've fumbled through it so far and haven't had to do too many things twice.

I'm getting ready to start the bushings. Any suggestions on brand or materials? I've seen many different kits. Some have many bushings some are small kits. Do I need them all. like the body bushings? do I need those.

And finally, as I stated above, I'm a first timer. Any advice, pitfalls to avoid?

I just did the ball joints and centerlink. Pain in the butt. I think its right. How tight do you tighten the crown nuts? How much grease do you use?

Thankfully my wheels haven't fallen off yet.

Thanks

I didn't replace the body bushing as they aren't bad, and I didn't want any problems with snapping off any body bolts.
Crank the crown nuts down tight, if the cotter key holes do not line up, tighten further until they do, never back off to line up.
Fill the zirts until grease comes out of the rubber protective boots.
Wheel bearings you want to tighten until you feel you can't tighten any more, then back off to align the cotter key, that allows room for the bearing to expand some as they get warm when driving.

Some ball joints will blow the boots if you over grease. Just pump enough in to slightly "inflate" them. Also, when tightening the wheel bearings, I like to use a small channel lock or small wrench..tighten unil the nut stops turning, then back off a smidge to line up the cotter pin. Do NOT tighten them too much...they need some running clearance as Rukee said. Leave the body bushings alone unless they are coming apart. The one's on both my GTO's are original, and are fine. As for A-arm bushings, lots of ways to go. I've always used the Moog rubber ones, as I like a nice ride that's not overly harsh. They do wear out faster than poly bushings, though.

I went with Moog bushings and ball joints on mine also. So far I am happy with them. My body bushings were also shot and needed replacing. They were a huge pain to change, so unless they are bad leave them alone. The bolts are held in the body by a caged nut. If they rust too bad, the cage will break loose and the nut will spin. The only way to get in there is to cut a whole in the floorpan. I soaked mine in PB blaster for a few days and did everything I could to be gentle, and still ended up breaking two of them. Not fun.
