Best and Worst Certified Used Cars

Interesting read. Surprisingly, the G6 is listed as a bad choice for a used car.

I bought the 2008 Consumer's Reports 2008 Best and Worst Cars Issue. 2005-07 G6 cars are listed as cars to avoid. Also, they list the 2005-2006 GTO as a car to avoid, but not the 2004. The only Mustang listed as a bad choice is the 2005 V6.

After reading this issue, I'm shocked by the poor quality of VW. Many of their cars are far below average and made the 'Cars to Avoid' list. They also said GM has greatly improved quality, but Honda is #1.

The G6 hasn't sold very well. GM has given a bunch of them to the rental fleets. The cars see hard use and marginal service for the first 25-30,000 miles of their life. My guess is if you avoid a rental car, you'll be ok.

As a side note, I was at Hertz this last week and they have about a 1/3 of their fleet from Toyota, Highlanders, Solora convertibles, Camry's, Corolas and some trucks too. A good portion of the other rental fleets had a bunch of Toyotas in them. That's where Toyota is getting its sales this year. My guess is that a bunch of people are going to buy used Toyota rentals and have problems down the road too. Also that will really kill resale value on them and pull other Toyotas down as well.

All of our magazines dis our brands. Whether it's consumers or motor trend, the Honda's and Toyota's are always their choice. Even with the superior fit and finish of the GTO's they were dis'd from the start.

That's strange to read that "the G6 doesn't sell well". There appear to be 2 parked on every block where I live and I see the same if not more of these than rustangs on the road. Interesting, maybe I can't generalize for the rest of the country.

Let me change my statement. The G6 hasn't sold as well as projected and it hasn't sold as well as the last Grand Am did in 1999, 2000 and 2001 when it was still a new bodystyle. Pontiac has put large incentives on the G6 and has sold a ton to fleets, and they are now all over used car lots and making their way into private owners hands now.

I still believe Pontiac made a mistake discontinuing the Grand-Am. That was one reliable, popular car. It was also sharp looking. Pontiac got bored with the line and made a change and replaced it with the G6.

Chevrolet did the same with the Monte Carlo and replaced it with the Lumina. That failed and the Monte Carlo came back. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with the Grand-Am. Totally redesigned I am sure and most probably it wouldn't command the popularity it once had.

GM tried to fix what wasn't broke and broke what didn't need fixed.

Even though there was a limited run of Grand-AM's for 2005 not all dealers could get them. 2004 was the "Official" last year for them. I got my wife a 2004 GT with the SCT and she will not part with it. At 30 mpg with a 3.4L V6 I don't blame her.
