Gas Prices

I can't quite understand the current fuel prices. In august we were paying 1.30 for regular and 1.50 for premium. The hurricanes came and the prices spiked. I have no problem with that. I work in the lumber industry and we saw prices double. Now lumber/plywood prices are back within 10% of where they were. We are told the slight price increase is due to fuel prices. Why hasn't gas/oil prices done the same?????? The production capacity is back to normal, and if anything demand is slightly softer. The average price around here is 2.29, almost a dollar a gallon more than before the hurricanes. I didn't think in most cases there was gouging before, but now is when they are really gouging us!!!!!

These prices are crazy. Don't know if we'll ever see sub $2.00 premium again.

This is typical for the Oil Industry. When they need to increase for legitimate reasons, the ablility to roll them back when things even out disappears. I just paid 2.85 a gallon Thursday for Shell Premium. For those of us that are a little long in the tooth, we remember the gas shortage (cough), about 25-30 years ago. Presence at the pumps was regulated by the number of your license plate. Odd or even in regard to the date. Although I wasn't affected by that,(in the Fire Service), it was amazing how after a while the shortage no longer existed. Personally I think its just another way for the Oil Industry to stick it to the people in this country. Like you mentioned, the lumber has evened off to within 10 % of where it was. As far as gas going below 2.00 per gallon again......Rots o ruck.

The oil prices cut their margins during the holiday season so the entire country wouldn't riot.

But now the price of crude, driven by Wall Street speculators, is back over $64 a barrel -- because the Iranians removed some United Nations padlocks at a uranium enrichment facility. Given that this winter has been really mild -- it's just a handy excuse to drive commodities prices up. It's a load of crap.

Out here, we're looking at $2.49 a gallon for premium at the absolute cheapest locations. Just hoping that we don't see another spike like last year.

I'd say keep this in mind during the Congressional elections later this year -- but it doesn't really matter as everybody has been bought off by big oil with bribes, oops, I mean campaign and PAC contributions.

Exactly. If anyone thinks that the price of a gallon of gas at your local Texaco is controlled by the demand for a gallon of gas, they don't understand the markets at all. It's not supply and demand of actual materials (lumber, oil, frozen concentrated orange juice), but the demand of the futures.

When we get a nice Democrat, like our little Hillary, back in office...then we may see prices head south.

GW wants to do too many favors for the greedy buds in the oil biz. Eeesh!

What I hate is that bad news pushes prices at the pump up immediately; when the problem's "fixed" then we have to wait for inventory to be sold off before it can come back down. They get the best case scenario, both ways.

I've been a diehard Republican most of my life, but I'm leaning towards the Democrats for this coming election. At least they give lip service to the "little people".

I think most all of the politicians are crooks, because once you're elected, to stay there, you've got to get in bed with the special interests and do their bidding to get the campaign money to get re-elected.

Not the way the system was designed to work- - -but I don't know of any countries with anything better.
