Saw a cool ride today!

I had to run an emergency service call this morning, and decided to take the Z instead of the van. On my way back home, I saw the rear end of a vintage Charger up ahead, with a huge rear wing . It had massively wide (and tall) rear tires, "General Lee" orange paint and the full-width tail lights (not sure which year). I caught up and got side-by-side, gave the driver the "Peace" sign and pulled ahead to get a look at the front. It had the aero front nose cone too. I had seen these in magazine articles, but never in the flesh. It was fantastic!

Yup, but with staggered wheels/tires, a mean rake and no stripe. I wish I could've captured a picture of it.

Here's yer early American rice!

Here's the Charger Daytona's ugly sister, a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner (aka the Superbird). A friend of mine had a superbird just like this in high school. Same color. The Charger Daytona was a clone.

I always thought it was riduculous looking. A bit embarrasing to be seen in.

Some of the late 60's muscle cars from Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, Dodge, Plymouth had beautiful proportions and still look great today. This isn't one of them. Dodge/Plymouth took the basically attractive design of the Charger to ridiculous Hot Wheels territory. Thankfully it was very short lived.

Let's start with the most obvious feature, that hideous wing. Next, look at the front overhang with the "aero" nose. Now look at the rear overhang. Next, look at the wheels/tires in relation to the acres of sheet metal. About the only thing I liked was the paint. It does catch the eye though. Pretty hard to ignore one, then or now.

Agreed. I prefer the '69 Charger as is; no wing, no tacked on 'aero' nose. Either way, I'd still be blown away seeing any models on the road today as they are extremely rare cars.

Back in the "Day" Those cars sat on lots. Dealers couldn't give them away. Once the dealers removed the wing and nose, they were able to move them.

Today they are bringing over 150K.

I would love to have one. There is one guy who shows his Blue Super bird at area car shows. He is perhaps the most arrogant SOB I have ever come across who shows.

Keep in mind, they didn't sell the cars like that because they were huge sellers. They sold them because back in the day, they had to produce a certain amount of a car for it to be able to be raced in NASCAR. Ahh, the good old days when a stock car was almost stock.
