I've been off due to work injury since Oct 29th '07. Still going to therapy for high ankle sprain three days a week two hours each day. Well, my shift was working New Years Eve and ran into a little trouble, and ofcourse me being out still on workers comp. I wasnt able to be there for my men. I am a Corporal in charge of a shift of three other guys who were working that night. Life is so uncertain and I keep trying to tell myself, enjoy what you have today, because you never know what tomorrow might bring. I used differnt letters to replace the officers names for their privacy.
" If your unsure whether to take the goat out for a daily drive on a day that could bring some rain, I say just do it, because you never know if that day will ever come again." Just a little something I wanna share with my fellow forum brothers.
This is my world:
As many of you may know, Ofc. A , Ofc.B. Ofc. C, Ofc. D and Ofc. E were working New Year's eve and were involved in a critical incident. All of the guys were actively being shot at while on Wesley Street, and while being involved in a foot chase with suspect who had been seen shooting in the air and then at Ofc. A and Ofc. B, the suspect turned on Ofc.A with the gun. Ofc. A fired one shot at Suspect. Luckily Suspect had discharged all of his rounds prior to the foot chase. Ofc. A apprehended suspect, and while in the process, suspect tried to disarm Ofc. A. Ofc. B had to also make a decision to use deadly force, but could not fire because of the close proximity to fellow officers. Ofc. B then used and appropriate amount of force to stop the threat of suspect going for Ofc. A's gun. All officer's that night went through some ****, but especially Ofc. A and Ofc. B. If you get a chance, give them a call just to bull**** or show your support for them. Everyone working last night and those that came in to assist showed the highest degree of professionalism. No one bitched about being called in or having to stay over and it really made me proud to see our department support each other. So, if you get a chance, give them a call and tell them good job. No one was severely injured and we only lost a windshield and LAC lost one too.

Shots fired at police in Salem
Wednesday, January 02, 2008
By Randall Clark rclark@sjnewsco.com
SALEM Celebratory gunfire that erupted shortly after the clock struck midnight on New Year's Day resulted in a volatile confrontation between responding authorities and an unruly mob here, officials said Tuesday.
At approximately 12:04 a.m., officers of the Salem City Police Department were called out to a residential neighborhood on Wesley Street in an attempt to locate suspects discharging firearms as part of their festivities, according to Salem County Chief of Detectives Ralph P****.
The officers came under gunfire and after arresting one suspect, a crowd in excess of 60 people pelted police vehicles with rocks and bricks before being disperse, Padilla said. Several surrounding police departments and troopers from the state police responded to assist in diffusing the near-riot. No other arrests were made and no injuries were reported.
The man arrested, 30-year-old David Bell of Eakin Street, allegedly shot at officers after they came upon him discharging his firearm. He then fled on foot. Officers who pursued Bell returned fire towards him and a physical confrontation occurred when he was apprehended. Bell, a suspected Bloods gang member, allegedly tried to disarm an officer before being subdued. He was arrested and a 9mm handgun, ammunition and quantities of cocaine and marijuana were seized.
"This violent confrontation by a reputed Bloods gang member shows the direct correlation of the threat that gangs, guns and drugs presents to the law enforcement community now in Salem County," P***** said.
The incident marked the first criminal episode of the new year, continuing a saga of violence in the city that law enforcement officials will attempt to quell under newly-appointed Chief of Police John P*****.
P*****, who was sworn in Dec. 17 to replace former Police Chief Ronald S****, said that he and his command staff had an operational plan in place that dedicated numerous officers to concentrate on that area of the city on New Year's Eve.
"We had no way to forecast the amount of violence that our officers encountered," P**** said Tuesday. "It is a credit to our officers who came under fire and to the surrounding police departments that were able to take police action and diffuse such a volatile situation without substantial risk to the community."
Bell, who constituted the lone arrest in the mayhem, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of a police investigation, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a firearm, certain persons prohibited from possessing a firearm, possession of a firearm while engaged in a drug-related criminal offense, attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone and possession of marijuana, authorities said.
He was committed to the Salem County Correctional Facility in lieu of $200,000 cash bail.
Officials said that despite an unfavorable omen ringing in the new year, their commitment to cleaning up the streets of Salem City remains unwavering.
"This incident in no way will take away from our resolve to rid this area of the city from individuals who recklessly put law abiding citizens at risk by shooting guns within the city," P***** said.
Yes, that is where I work. Your from Atlanta and found that today? I just read it this evening in the local newspaper, my mother dropped it off to me. The officer that took a shot at the suspect not only is on my shift, but is a good friend of mine. Thankful nobody was hurt.

Not too unfavorable. That @hole is now off the streets.

Salem City use to be a nice town where I grew up. I live on the outskirts now. The council members are dumping millions on brick sidewalks(uptown) renovationg really old building (uptown) for senior citizens, bulding parking garage. What we need is more police, more backing from council, more equipment, and to put a limit on HUD that is flocking people to this little town from all over the country. I don't want to even get started. I guess that is why I joined the GTO world, to get away from the one I live around and work in. Ten more years and I can retire having 25 years of service. I'll be 46 when eligible to retire. Then I don't know what I will do. I'd love to move somewhere that I can run my goat all year long, but the wife likes the snow. Decisions.
PS= At times like listed above, I often wonder, should I just drive that goat on a day that rain is expected or keep it parked for another day which you never know may not come again. Life is sure uncertain.

I searched a few key words from your post, thanks for your efforts and devotion to keep our streets safe!
If a police officer defends himself in a situation like that he goes through tons of crap. I always feel sorry for police in those situations. You guys do a heck of a thankless job.
I learned to enjoy everyday from a life threatening incident too. That's definately good advice to live every day to the fullest.
Many years ago I answered an ad for Brinks Armored Security. The ad read pretty well so I applied. Brinks would send me to Fire Arms school, ok fine I thought. I was told the job is risky. NO $hit.
I went through the entire interview and was offered a position driving Armored Truck picking up and making deliveries. I laughed in the interviewers face when I was told the starting salary was 9.50 hr to start. The medical benefits were as pathetic as pathetic can be with a high weekly out of pocket deduction. Take another 1.00 an hour off the starting salary rate. I said you gotta be kidding. I was told Brinks pays better than others. HA.
I read what Police Officers have to go through when they draw their guns and shoot someone when protecting themselves. I can only imagine what would happen to an 8.50 hr slug pulling a gun and shooting someone who tries to steal money from them. I have also read what happens to those security guards who do not fire first. Making a little over minimum wage with a gun with authority to shoot ....was not worth the consequences should I have been put in a situation like a police officer.
