1964 Pontiac Question ???

My question is . How rare is a 1964 Pontiac tempest 2 door sedan ? I ordered PHS docs , and surprisingly this was factory ordered with a 326 / 4 speed muncie , and special ordered paint . Car is in a red primer now , but thinking of going with an orange . Still have the original motor and tranny . I was told that in mid 64 , some tempest were actually GTO's . How can I confirm if I have what is considered a GTO ?

PHS would have had that confirmation, it would have shown up as the "GTO" option. If you didn't see that then it is just a Tempest.

Welcome to the forums.

Not a GTO, your PHS documents verify this. The Tempest is the base model and could be had in three series as the base Tempest, Tempest Custom, and (Tempest) Lemans. Then in 1964 the GTO option package was available on the Lemans. Yours is a Tempest. The GTO had the optional 389 where you have the 326CI BUT you may either have the base 250HP(block code 92X/960) or the HO 280HP(block code 94X/970) engine which your PHS docs should tell you.

Special Order paint has been covered here before and sadly, the color is not usually identified on the documents. You would need to have some of the original color left on the car or if you had any original owner documents or knowledge of what the color was to truly know.

KEEP THE CAR A TEMPEST. So many clone a GTO and so few Tempest or Lemans' are ever seen on the street or at car shows. KEEP the 326CI for the same reason. You don't need to swap it with a larger 389/400/455 to get some performance out of it. Again, you don't see many 326's in a Pontiac engine bay. Check out this facebook page put up by one of our members with a '64 Lemans Convt. that he is in the process of finishing. He kept the original 326CI, and rebuilt the engine to the 280HP HO engine specs and added a few of his own (non-factory)emblems/decals and the factory chrome valve covers/air cleaner to make a statement that it is a 326 HO engine. It sounds great. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Grump...3261937?ref=hl

To answer your question "how rare is it?": Very rare. The fact that it's an original 4 speed Tempest, and the fact it hasn't been turned into yet another cloned GTO makes it very rare indeed. What Pontiac Jim said, 100%. Keep it a Tempest, and enjoy. You will get a lot more interest at car events than if it were turned into another clone. 4-speed '64 Tempests are FAR more rare than 4-speed '64 GTO's.

I agree everything said so far except keep the 326 in the car.. I'd hold on to it if you're ever gonna sell it, but put in a bigger motor. Yeah.. you can get good performance out of a smaller engine, but at the end of the day there is no replacement for displacement. If you don't care about big performance... keep the 326.

Keep the 326 they are not weak and while if it was a normal automatic tempest with a two barrel putting a bigger engine might be ok you'd destroy the rarity of the car by doing so. A small (if you can call a 326 that) v8 with a 4 speed is worth putting up with less performance to preserve the rarity
