It does look like you missing a number or two prior to the letter P.
2 = Pontiac
The next 4 numbers is the body style, you have only 3, which makes it incomplete. You have 376. It sounds like it is a convertible, if so, it would be 3767 (you missing a 7). The registration you provided shows the body to be a 2DSD, which I take as a 2 door sedan. You need to look at the VIN plate on the car to see what numbers you are missing.
P = Pontiac, MI plant
The rest of the numbers is the serial number.
Also the number 5 would be after the 4 digit body style number for the 1965 model year.
