66 GTO 389 Tri - "Screeching" noise when car first starts

As soon as I turn the key there is a loud short skreeching sound and the car fires right up. Usually it's a sign of maybe a loose belt, but they all seem tight. The sound doesn't continue while the car is running so I don't think it's a pully.... any suggestions.

Starter shimmed correctly? Check the flywheel teeth and the teeth on the starter bendix for wear.

Also check belt alignment, Pontiacs used so many different pulley configurations and bracket spacers that it is not uncommon to have some vertical alignment issues. Take a long straight edge if you can and hold it flat against the face of the pulleys that share a belt to make sure they are aligned. The straight edge should sit perfectly flat on the face of both pulleys. Belts should all appear straight when viewed from the side.

Does it screech before the car starts or right after it starts?

The minute I turn the key it does it. It doesn't sound mechanical, like metal on metal. Sounds like my 70 Chevelle used to when the belt got worn or the tensioner went bad. But like I said they feel really snug.

Pull the coil wire off so it doesn't start and just crank it and see if it happens.

Okay then I would put the coil wire back on and take off the belts and try it again.

Well I finally foundf out what this noise was. The person who had the car before me added a high output Be Cool radiator and added a OE fan shroud. Since they don't come to fit the Be Cool it had to be modified. I say that loosely since it came loose and a chunk broke off. When I took a good look at the broken piece and what was still attached to the radiator I could see where the fan blades were rubbing on the shroud on the bottom. It seems that little bit of engine torque when you start the car was enough to make contact witht he shroud. with the whole thing off the noise is gone.

Awesome that you found it, but you should run a shroud. I would trim t were the fan was hitting it and put it back on.

Yea, plan on it. The top third of it broke off, so three quarters of it is still in place. I ordered another OE one and plan to trim it to size ( the right way ) It's hard for me to figure how a supposed "car guy" (the previous owner) lucky enough to have a car like this can "half ass" the modifications/repairs. Oh well, she's in good hands now ! Thanks for your input here.
