AC Compressor Upgrade?

Hello, I have a 1969 GTO with factory air. I kinda regret the AC part, it takes up sooooo much room. I suspect that the compressor (or compressor clutch) is going out and I was wondering if there was an aftermarket replacement that incorporated the compressor and muffler in one less massive unit? Is that muffler thing needed with a modern compressor?

Thanks!
Mike
