Clean out carbon (WOT) how often?

Hey guys, long time no see.

I decided to floor my Bonneville for the first time in...a long time today. A good amount of sooty black smoke came out the exhaust, which is to be expected after babying the car for probably 6 months. It got me thinking.

How often do/should you go WOT to "clean out the carbon" in an otherwise stock, original classic? From a pure maintenance standpoint..

Depends. On mine, I never need to, because the cars are driven at speed on the open road for long distances. They both see WOT often enough, though! If you drive in town only, you need to clear it out fairly often. If you only 'get on it' every 6 months, you run the risk of knocking a big chunk of carbon off a piston or head and possibly doing some damage. Not likely, but possible. Best solution is to drive the car on the highway, and get it warmed up. Repeated short trips kill these cars.

Hmmm... If I'm honest, I guess I go WFO pretty much once every time I drive it.

When the only tool in your toolbox is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.
