Cragar S/S and spare

I'm currently running Cragar super sports with the spinner mag caps - 16x7 front (225/55) and 17x8 rears (245/45). Any suggestions on what I can use as a spare? I can't seem to locate these wheel sizes with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern on eBay or Craigslist although I keep looking. I still have the original factory spare steelie and I don't think using a 14 inch rim as a spare is feasible with this set-up.

I don't carry a spare in mine. Don't drive it that much. I have roadside assistance included on my insurance. Learned this from having a late model Corvette that doesn't come with a spare (or room to put one), and this is what a lot of Corvette people do. AAA is also an option.

That is an option and prevents the need for a mat and trapping moisture in the trunk. I have both classic roadside assistance and AAA too but feel a bit silly calling them for a flat tire. I guess it's better than leaving it on the side of the road and coming back later.

I would think a 15" would work. There are plenty of this size available. I also carry a plug kit. Look at todays cars that drive around on a donut. I have used a 18" on one of my cars that had 19" wheels and it got me home.

IF you have a limited slip rear end, you will need to run the exact same tire height on each side of the rear, or you will burn up the clutches. I have the same size on all 4 on my '67 and 15's on the back of the '65, but I carry a 14' spare. If I get a flat in the rear, i'll have to do a roadside tire rotation, and move the 14's to the back and the one good 15 to the front so as not to burn up my rear end. Roadside assistance sounds like a good idea to me.

The key here is to measure your tire height. I would think that you could go with a 15" rim and then go to your local tire store of choice and have them look up a tire that best matches your current tire height. Even though you have the 16's and 17's, it seems the side walls are shorter, a 15" tire has a taller side wall which may actually may give you a somewhat similar overall tire height. Tire store should be helpful on this one.

+1 Exactly and even one mile can do the damage.

I would measure tire height in back and carry a spare of that diameter. Or portable onboard compressor and a can of fix a flat.

And a +1 on the roadside assistance. My insurance company has sent out a flatbed for me before, sorry to say, but they made it a painless (and pay-less) experience. And unfortunately it wasn't for a flat tire........


I don't carry a spare either btw. Hard to do with a 45 gallon fuel cell in the trunk .

Yes I think the Pontiac Jim hit it right on the head All you need to do is measure the height of your tire & then get a 15" tire&wheel that is the same height & you'll be all set. All you need is a tire that is the same height not the same size. The car will never know if you have a 15 on one side & a 17 on the other. Because of the insurance I have I use to not carry a spare but I do now . The more the car is worth the more you never want to leave it out of you sight,, not even for a few min's. I have a friend who broke down on the hwy. about 5 years ago . He had to walk for about 1/2 hour to get some help, no phone on him. When he got back to where the car should have been all he found was some marks from where someone had either towed or picked the car up. That was the last he saw of his 67 GTO. The ins. paid for the car but like him I like to have a spare now so I don't have to leave the car alone any where......................

Thanks for the tips and suggestions guys. I probably will go with a 15" wheel and measure accordingly for a spare. I like the look of the vintage Cragars but do run a lower profile tire to avoid fender rub. I thought if I could find another 16x7 in our bolt pattern it would do the trick, but they rarely seem to come up for sale.

X3 on the height of the tire. No matter what the wheel diameter, if the tire height is 27" (or 25", or whatever), get a spare that has the same tire diameter to save your rear end (pun intended).
