Am I missing something here?
I thought there was some electrical connection between the bottom of the rotor and the points.

Nope, no connection at all - at least not anywhere inside the distributor. Know anything about electronics? The ignition coil is nothing but a big transformer. The points are really just a switch that operate to close and open the "primary" circuit in the coil. The constant making and breaking of the "primary" circuiit (turning it on and off) is what induces the high voltage spark energy in the "secondary" circuit inside the coil. The rotor under the distributor cap is what directs the energy created in the "secondary" circuit of the coil out to the correct cylinder.
