Drive Shaft

this should be easy to answer. my 69 drive shaft is thicker in the middle. It tapers down maybe a half inch one each end. One end the taper is about 4 inches from the yoke. On the other end, it tapers down about a foot from the yoke. When end goes toward the trans and which end toward the rear end?

Well, strip my gears and call me shiftless....

I never noticed it was different on each end. It's not going to make a difference in how long it lasts or how strong it is. I'm guessing the different taper is there maybe for clearance reasons. My original '69 drive shaft is about 80 miles away right now, otherwise I'd go check it for you. (It still has the tranny yoke attached so I'd be able to tell). If'n it were me, I'd mock it up both ways and see if one way seems to make "more sense" than the other.

Both of mine '65 GTO 4 speed and '67 GTO automatic have the short taper at the front and the longer taper at the diff. end. Not sure if '69 is the same, but I'd bet next month's pay on it.

Thanks guys. It seems like the short taper should be at the front. I"m guessing it's something engineers did for some reason that doesn't have an explanation I"d understand. It doesn't seem to be clearance so it's gotta be something they figured out on a slide rule.

I have another driveshaft question. The last time I put a universal in a big, American car, the retainer clips fit into grooves near the outside of the yoke. So the cups were inset the distance of the width of the clips plus a little metal for strength.

The manual shows the retainer clips going on the universal joint itself, inside the yoke and the cups. That might keep the joint from going past the inside edge of the yoke but what keeps the cup from popping out the end of the yoke?
