help with $ on 65 GTO convert.

I have found a 1965 GTO convert. in NC .He ststes it is a lemans per the VIN# but he says GTO was a $297.00 option so it has badges of GTO on it.What's the truth of this as I am green on these cars.
Has a rebuilt 389 with a new GM 700 R-4 Auto Trans.
Is that good.
He is asking $32,000.00. and says there is not much wiggle room. It is a fairly new dark blue paint. Was there a dark blue for that year? Parchment int. with white top. What are the good and bad points as I am thinking of buying it to keep as a driver and investment.
Thank you so much.
Jeff

In 64 and 65 the GTO package was indeed an option to the lemans, however the price difference between a 65 lemans and a confirmed 65 GTO is 10 to 20 grand.

If you are going to spend that kind of money you should confirm the car you are looking at is a true GTO.

The best way is to order a PHS report from PHS Historic Services, another way is to ask for the information from the data plate, the GTOs built in the Kansas City Plant and The Pontiac Plant will have a code of 5N listed on the bottom line of the data plate.

The non-original transmission may reduce the value of the car, If you want post the data plate info and several on this forum will help you with the codes.

Good luck,

Randy

Jeff: It sounds to me like the car is a LeMans. Yes, the GTO option was only approx. $300 more, but the reality of it is, most people bought Lemans's and Tempests. That $300 more got you a heck of a lot more than just emblems. It got you a big engine, a heavy duty suspension, heavy duty cooling system, and a plethora of other highly desirable performance options. Nobody thought 40 years ago that GTO's would be worth 100k! Few people had the foresight to buy GTO. They bought the lesser (but still great) Lemans. That being said, where I am, GTO's bring much more than a mere 10 to 20 k over a LeMans. No comparison. An expertly done Lemans Convt. clone may bring 30 k or so, but that's top dollar. An equal condition GTO convt. will pull 2 to 3 times as much. It costs the same to restore the $30 k car as it does the $90k car. Very few GTO's were made. The demand is high. GTO's will always be sought after as the "first" musclecar, as an investment, and as a great car to drive. Buy the clone if you want to have fun driving it. Buy a REAL GTO if you want an investment.
Good Luck.....
Jeff

Thanks again for all of your information.
Here is the VIN and data tag
VIN# 237675P370881
Data Plate 08B2
65 23767 PON14457
213-B A2
W 2 WGP
I appreciate all the help
I realize 37 on the VIN means Le Mans or GTO.
How do tell which one?

It is a lemans, if it were a GTO it would have a 5N where I inserted the red 5n. In my opinion the car is worth $12k to $18k depending on the condition.
