Help!!

Hey, I'm trying to buy my first muscle car. I really favor the GTOs, so I've got that much done (although the Chevelles are nice too!). I found a 69, 2 door hardtop, with a 400 engine, with 85k miles, and its in really nice shape. Its on ebay, sold by Cherner Classics in Maryland. It's a YS Coupe (what does YS mean anyway?) The current bid is around 14000. I'm wondering what to bid on the car. Any thoughts?

There are 04 goats going for 17 in my area with low low miles. Just a thought.

YS is the engine suffix code. It corresponds to 400 350hp with automatic transmission. It is the base engine in 69 although a 2barrel carb regular gas engine was a no charge option. If the engine is original it should have the VIN stamped on the front of the engine parallel to the timing chain cover on the passenger side. You would typically have to lay under the car with a flashlight and a rag to wipe off any grease to view it. Base engine 69's hardtops in nice driver (but not show) condition range mid teens to low twenties depending on originality, codition, options and color. Have you looked at the car in person?

thanks for the advice. i have driven it and yes it has power! but there's a ton of little things, like cracked dash, hood sits bit crooked, window weather stripping probs. ,etc. any more advice?

Cracked dash is a common problem- you can live with it, get a "dash mat", get a shell cover, or remove the dash and have it revinyled (expensive). Some have used a "Dr Vinyl" type repair but I haven't been pleased with the results. Weather stripping is readily available and an easy project. Body panel fitment is a little tricky on these. Body panel fitment wasn't great on the cars when new and getting good alignment requires patience and practice. Hood out of alignment could indicate previous collision damage but not necessarily- the painter may have just rushed reassembly of the front sheetmetal.

Advise -take someone experienced in these older cars to look at it with you. Contact a local car club and ask if there is anyone who would look at it with you. A pontiac guy would be ideal but a chevy, olds, or buick guy would do in a pinch. Look for someone on the wrong side of 40!
