Hey Rich...injn37

I got to use that fancy bushing tool today. I needed to make a special washer and use a 2" pipe coupling but it worked slick. I did use it last winter for 1 front bushing but the inner threaded rod was turning and I didn't know it until I had it stripped. I cleaned it up enough to use it today but I'll get a replacement soon.




I had to cut the lip off the old bushing to get the coupling on. If I can invent a way to grind the threads out, it will slip over without cutting the bushings. The ear on the other side was a biotch. The bushing is almost touching the housing so I had to grind down a washer and use a standard nut until I could get it pulled far enough for the correct collar. I got so busy fabricating tools and using them that it was out before I thought of the camera.
Headed back to the shop to start on the front arms. I have the oval bushings on the lower rears, so it will be interesting.

I just put the bushings in the freezer for 30 minutes, brushed some assembly lube on them, and using a big hammer and a socket that fit, drove them in. Took about 5 minutes. I applaud more scientific means of installation, though. I guess I'm just a blacksmith at heart!

But that puller does look slick.

I may do that to install the new ones but I wasn't going to start beating on those cast ears and risk breaking them if the originals were seized in. Once I got the right combination and size of washers and spacers, they came out pretty easy.

The fronts were a different story.... I figured out today why I stripped the threads on the thru rod getting the first one out last winter. The cup for the bushing head to feed into is too shallow and it bottoms out. Then the collar that needs to feed thru the arm with the bushing was too big. It took about 10 minutes of precision grinding by hand to get the collar to clear and I just used the 2" coupling for the receiver cup. The rear oval ones needed a 2 3/8 socket for the bushing to clear ! They were still VERY tight. I would pre-load the puller and then smack the arm with a hammer to get them to "pop". Tighten, smack, etc until they came out. Got them all out. Next up is a good cleaning to remove the JB 80 I used to help them out and paint.

Got both of the lowers and 1 upper cleaned and sprayed with Eastwood Rust Converter today.

Mitch, Glad it worked. I am sorry that I never got the 'spacer /tensioner/what ever you call it part for you made. It kind if slipped through the cracks in my brain.
As for the rod you stripped, was it the 3/8 or the 3/4( or was it 5/8)? I have plenty left over, and can send you a hunk. Tell me the size and length.

It will though take a little over two weeks to get there as I am busy chilling some beer for the beach right now !!!!

Also, when you use things like this, always keep the threads well oiled/greased.

No problem, Rich, I bought a piece of threaded rod at the hardware store. I also bought some bolts and am in the process of building the spreader for the upper arm myself. Look for pics later this week, I hope....
