ignition wire short?

Well, I'll try to explain what happened. Whet to a car show and it started and ran well. Got there and my buddy told me I had no tail lights. Found a loose-disconnected positive wire in one of the tail lights. Thought this would explain the fuse blowing. That was the first issue. But when I was fiddling around under the dash with the ignition key on checking out the connecting to my flasher, the main ignition wire from the firewall that connects to the coil was smoking and getting real hot top to the extent of the insulation burning off. After pulling out the wires and locating the wire from the firewall block I was able to get 12 volts from the wire, but with the coil wire connected it stated again. I disconnected the red wire coming from the brreakerless points distributor to the coil ( two wire type) the short was not present. Connecting the distributor, it started again. I'm not the best at figuring these things out, but I think I'm going to replace the engine harness, the coil and take a look at the inside of the distributor and hopefully a wire came loose and shorted things out. One, am I on the right tack and two, can anyone help with a proper installation of the two wire breakerless distributor and also how the large white ballast thing is wired. I have only the negative wire hooked up to it. What type of coil would you recommend with these types of distributors.

Sorry for the long question.......any help is desperately needed......

if true two wire, blk from dist goes to neg. coil terminal, and leave out the ballast and attach ignition wire and red dist. wire to pos. side of coil. That way I am sure it gets a full 12 volts and no connections to fail. coil should be non oil type. any hd stock coil will work. google petronix wiring for suggested details.
