New to the forum.

I've been on here for a while reading through treads, but finally regiatered. I have wanted a 67 gto for a long time now and finally broke down and purchased one. The car needs to be restored, but everything is there and overall solid. The body has some minor surface rust in misc. places, but everything is solid no holes in any panels. The floors look to be in good shape, but the trunk has one hole about 3". the interior is all there, but needs to be restored. The previous owner started to restore the car he had the short block rebuilt and the trans gone through. I'm still up in the air on weather or not I'm going to finish the restoration or sell it and buy one already finished. Any input is appreciated also what do you guys think it is worth the way it sits? I think I got a pretty good deal on it, but I have found any comparable to base the value off of.

That is an awesome car, especially for back east. If it were me, I would go thourgh the safety stuff, brakes, tires, engine, cooling, trans, etc. Make it a safe runner, and drive it the way it is. I've got over 300,000 miles on my car. It too has the original interior. You would be suprised at how that will clean up with a little elbow grease. Put some seat covers on it. Just make it a high priority to kill any rust. It's nice to be able to thrash your goat and not have to worry about detailing it everytime you drive it.

+1 get all the mechanicals working good. looks like a solid foundation, get the motor in and make it a driver, and have some fun, before you even consider flipping it (you will want to keep it then). i have seen some nice complete resto's in the mid 20's lately. You will get a better price if you do decide to sell as a driver vs. rebuilt engine not in car also. values are depressed with the economy right now, so it's a buyers market.welcome to Pontiac Land

Thanks everyone. I'm still up in the air on what to do. I played with the idea of cleaning it up putting the motor and trans back in and driving it, but I don't think I'll be happy with all the imperfections. So a frame off restoration is the only option I think.

A lot of people think they need a frame off restoration and they really don't. I don't know the exact condition of the car, but I wouldn't think of that as a starting point.

slohawk, welcome to the forum. If you want a mint '67, buy one already done. Now is the time. you have a great car there, and I agree with the other guys: if I had it, I'd do an interior, clean it up, and drive it. I would not tear it apart and do a frame off resto on it. I've had both my GTO's ('65 hardtop and a '67 ragtop) for almost 3o years, and have driven them the whole time. I repaired them as things broke or wore out, but neither has ever been apart or restored. For me, the fun is driving these cars... taking them on vacation, to events, etc. If you are a perfection guy, and it sounds like you are, you will spend more money restoring your car than the price of a done one. My good friend Bill just got done restoring his '67 GTO that he's had since 1977....he did a frame- off on what was an original car that had no rust, needed almost no bodywork, and had no issues. It was cleaner than your car, and a good driver. It didn't "need" a restoration, but he wanted a "new" GTO. He spent around 30,000....and now his car drives and looks "new". He did ALL the mechanical work himself, and I helped a little. We are both auto technicinans. If he had paid to have this car done, the price would have been over 60,000. TO put this in perspective, I saw a comparable '66 GTO this weekend at the Turlock swap meet, beautiful car with almost no flaws.....even had the high back seats, Red/black/black, for 25k obo. With the market the way it is, you can not restore a car for less than the cost of a done one if you're an average guy.

with the 'frame on' resto, that's how I did mine, just removed all the front clip, doors, trunk lid and glass.
The economy is bad, I bet there are some upholstery shops that would throw a seat recover set and some door panels in there cheaper then you'd think.
