New Owner Question

I just bought myself a "driver" quality 1969 GTO a week ago. It is my first that I own. As I am going through it, one of the things that it needs is a new radio. The stock AM radio doesn't work at all.

I am looking for some recommendations... I have used Retrosound before but I am wondering if there are other better choices. Also, there seems to be only a speaker in the dash top and none by the kick plates nor rear deck. If I add speakers, I would like to know what some of the factory placement options were so I can try to be faithful to that.

Thanks for any help you can provide!!!!

Can't speak directly to a '69, but my '67 radio doesn't work either. If you crawl into the trunk you should be able to see if there are speaker cutouts in the sheet metal under the package tray. I don't think there were any in the door panels. If you have a smartphone, an option that people are pursuing is a Bluetooth speaker.

There is after market speakers that go in the floor vents. For stereo what i did was mount a 10 disk changer in the trunk, then a standard CD player in the consol bracketed by foam. ran the wires from it under the consol then under the carpet. Unless you really look you cant notice it. I have the original radio still in dash just it doesnt work. Not sure if this is an option you want to go with or not. There is also a company ill find the link that makes 1inch balls that mount ontop of the dash in the corners budy has it on his 66 malibu sounds good but once you notice them you cant help but notice them. Also mine is a 69

Welcome saturnkk.....
I too had the same problem. I have a 68 Lemans/all GTO under the skin. RA III w/3:73 gears and 400 auto.
I have a thread about this if you research it. My suggestion though, NO CUTTING!
I like to do cruising with some good tunes (Beach Boys) so I put in a quality radio w/ 4 three way speakers, 7 band EQ and a 160 watt amp with a 12" woofer. EXCELLANT SOUND!
Good luck

Hi Saturnkk; we just went with a direct fit am/fm/aux-in year correct looks radio in my 69. Stored the working original am radio. Decided to converse the center speaker into 2x 4" speakers and two more behind the covers over the kick plates (speaker covers were there but no speakers or wires). Works great and we hook up ipod and smart phone.

If you are looking for a low-cost solution that looks stock, you can also just add an AUX input to the AM radio.

The Delco radios can (usually) be repaired inexpensively.
I just had my AM-FM mono repaired and I added an aux input. The cost was under $90.

Add a factory fader, with front & rear speakers in the OEM locations (center of dash and rear deck) and you've got cheap tunes.

You can get the required 10 ohm speakers here:Classic Car Speakers

I purchased the Model Two radio from Retrosounds and I really like its functionality paired with its old school looks. I'm putting 2 3.5" speakers in my dash, 4" components in the doors, and am trying to decide on what to do with the rear. . . . I know I want to do at least one sub in a box under the package tray but I would like to do 2 10" subs if possible. I am also debating on putting some sort of speakers in the rear package tray but was curious what others have tried. I thought about mounting two 6X9s on the top of the sub box but I dont want too much going on. Im still pretty undecided. . . .
