New to Pontiac GTO's

Hey guys

Wondering if people can help me out. I am new to Pontiac Gto's always been a fan but most of my knowledge is in 1965-1968 Mustangs. I found a 1969 GTO covt I am interested in buying. Can people give me some pointers on how to spot and know a real GTO over a Clone. what car are they using to Clone a gto the Pontiac lemans? I know that Mustangs have decoder numbers on the doors does GTO's have to same thing? On a title for a 69 GTO what all does it say. Would it say GTO or would it say what GTO stands for? Anything that I sould be looking for that spots a real from a fake? Any info will be helpful.

Welcome to the Forum..

A PHS document (Pontiac Historical Society) will tell you about the car from new. PHS Historic Services

For 1969, the VIN will have a 42 in it. This will indicate a GTO. A 37 will indicate a Lemans.

This link will give you an idea how to identify the car by VIN.
1969 GTO Specifications - UltimateGTO.com

Study the info in particular the data plates.

You are correct, the Lemans can be cloned to the GTO. The engine, etc will be coded.

The likelihood of you finding a GTO with all matching numbers will be remote but they can be found. Pricing will be high. That is when you have to know exactly what you are looking at with documentation that will show the numbers are true to the car.

Chances are, if the car has been restored at all there may be Lemans parts on it as many of those parts are interchangeable. The VIN Is the key. Unless those parts, (body in particular) are stamped you won't know.

If you know any GTO or Pontiac guys try and have one see the car with you.

Welcome tot he forums.
Where is the car located? Perhaps one of our members could go with you and/or inspect the car for you.

Thanks

Thanks GTO JUDGE that was great info that I needed!!! The person selling the car already said that it was not the original motor but was a GTO motor not sure if it is a 69 GTO motor. Still asking the person questions about the car. I always proceed with caution and look the car over well, ask a lot of question and then think the buy over.

As far as where the car is located it is in Dallas, TX.

Thanks a lot

Welcome to the Tribe. Hope the 69 you're looking at turns out to be the one you want. There are a lot of guys and gals here to help. I'm partial to 69s and 04s myself. Good luck!
