Pictures~!

OK so a little while back I posted how my dad was passing down me his 1970 GTO. Since he lives about 600 miles away I haven't been able to see it since I found out. Well, the wait is over!! I was there this past weekend for a family wedding and got a bunch of pictures. Here she is!!

As a side note the data plate does look a little off to me with where the car was manufactured. Not sure if anyone knows about this in detail. Everything I am finding says it should have the three letters (ie PON or BAL) in the middle before the sequence number. This only has the B. Also, the sequence number shows as 034799 on the data plate, but the VIN on the dash is. Should these match? Any info on that would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a helpful site:
1970 GTO Specifications - UltimateGTO.com

The Body plate serial number is not the same number as the VIN.
Assuming your car was built in Baltimore, the VIN should be: 242370Bxxxxxx

The last 6 digits of the VIN should match the stamped numbers alongside the water pump housing on the lower, right side of the engine block.

Your data plate indicates:

1970 GTO 2 door coupe/hardtop (70 24237)
Built at??? I think a solo "B" is Baltimore, but I'm not certain.
Trim (258) = Black interior
Paint code 47 = Verdoro Green
Upper paint (top) code B = Black vinyl top
Build date = 09C; third week of September (1969)

Maybe someone else can chime in with the meaning of the "B" and "0041" in the bottom lone of the data plate; I don't know what those mean.

To have a "matching numbers" car, all the engine/trans/rear end and other manufacturing dates must pre-date the assembly week.

For example, your engine block casting date will probably be late July or August, but it could possibly be as late as the first week of September, 1969.

Looks like a GREAT car; good luck with it and have fun!

Thanks JMT! Glad to hear that body plate serial and the VIN should not be the same. I am guessing it was built in Baltimore too because the VIN is exactly what you described and matches the PHS documents I got. I was expecting the data plate to have a BAL and not a solo B but I guess that was not the case. Once I get the car to my place I am going to check all of the numbers. I am certain that the car is what I think it is. It even had the protect-o-plate in the center console! The PHS indicated a ship date of 9/26/69 so that would fit too. Thanks for the well wishes!

Yes sir! He did a great job making sure this thing was away from the elements at all times. Has only been driven 1500 miles since 1987. I'm not quite sure that lucky even covers it!
