Is this a real GTO?

Hello all, new to the forum and if this checks out I'll back with a new toy in the garage, I am looking at a '72 Pontiac which the vendor claims is a real GTO, is there a way of telling from the vin?

2D37T2P148420 is the vin, it's not a numbers matching car but at least I'd like to know if it started out as a GTO

Thank you

I think it is a Le Mans Sport built in Pontiac Mich.

apparently they are all Lemans in '72, the real question is whether it had the factory GTO package

The only way I know of to find out for sure is to order a PHS report.

The 5th digit "T" indicates a 4bbl 250hp 400 with dual exhaust which was standard for the 72 GTO and I believe it was an option for the Lemans. I agree with Goat Roper, PHS is the only way to be sure.
