Started!!

Well after shimming my Pertronix better and most of a can of starting fluid and swapping the [email protected]#$%^ wires 3 times.
It finally started and after about 5 times stayed running
OMG
smoke pouring out of the pipes as well as (looking afterward) piles of shredded paper and what looks like dirt or soot. (critters I guess)
I didnt realize the water pump wasnt turning i was so busy and mesmerized.
the header paint was smoking was smoking.............
I had to shut it down as water spewed from the rad.overflow hose......
I quickly put on the [email protected]#$%^&*()_+_)(*&^%- belt that runs the ps pump.....it was loose as hell. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
and ran for another 5 minutes before it overheated again.
I guess the fan wasnt turning fast enough and it wobbles.
a bit overwhelming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no tranny, but no oil leaks!!!!!!
I dont want to go in my garage again for 2 weeks but went in after 2 beers and a 1/2 hr

I may have F'ed up 1/2 my work but now I'm hooked......
I'm a Goat owner!!!!!

looks like the mice made a nice little nest in your exhaust pipe....bet you scared the hell out of them...i can just see Mickey and Minny flying out the tail pipe at 80 mph when it fired up...LOL...congrats Top....

Excellent, Topkat. Remember, if you have a new cam, you need to fire it up and keep the rpm at around 2000 for about 20 minutes. Don't let it idle. Fix your fluid leaks, etc. and give it another shot when you relax a bit. At least you know it RUNS!!!!

been wondering myself, would it help to set a blower in front of the radiator for break-in to force some air through to prevent overheating??

Funny stuff with the mice, guess they thought they were safe for the long run.. I try not to overtighten my belts, but they always squeel when you rev it untill you get them really tight, I don't know why, but my car is the same way and I don't like to put the side load on the pulleys, but I guess these cars you have to. Any additional airflow will help it to not overheat, so additional fans are a nice safeguard. I bet all the extra gas really lit up the mouse house. Hopefully the added fuel didn't wash the rings. Change the oil real soon, or NOW to get the gas out of the oil from all the cranking. Best of luck on the next fire up..

Mind what was said about letting it idle - you REALLY don't want to let it idle until you break in the cam (no less than 2000 rpm for 15-20 minutes - don't worry about trying to set the timing for this - good idea about setting up a fan or two to move some additional air through the radiator). If your fan's a-wobbling, either you've got a dead water pump or a bad fan clutch - you should be able to tell by wobbling the fan by hand and seeing were the slop is. Fix that before you run it again --- then give the cam a proper break in. After that's done you can relax a little, THEN set the timing, deal with any leaks, change the oil and filter, etc. If the wobble does turn out to be the water pump shaft and not the fan clutch, then be sure you "adjust" the pump plate before you re-install the new water pump - that helps a lot with cooling.
