I wanted to take the time to thank the many people on this forum for the help and information. I bought a 66 GTO 2 years ago in Detroit and brought it home to Texas. I knew it would be some work but did not expect it to be a complete frame off resto. The bottom floor board to trunk was replaced due to rust..This is the result as off last week.

I took it out for a drive today and it was pretty smooth except when I hit a medium dip at 30 mph. The front almost bottomed out and bounced back, which caught me by surprise. That suspension is pretty soft, even with new shocks all the way around. I was thinking to solve that problem, I need to change the shocks and springs to coil overs. what are your thoughts about it.

Also, I have headers on this car. The headers are barely clearing the steering shaft. it bumps the steering coupling. is there an aftermarket steering coupling that is just a little smaller in diameter out there?

Very nicely done!! I have a light blue 66 with vinyl top and Rally 1 wheels/red line tires. Love the one year only louvered taillights. It was also a frame off restoration. I just ordered Eaton Detroit Spring +2" coils for the rear as current ride height drags low whenever someone rides in the back seat. I also have an occasional "CLUNK" in the front suspension, which I am still chasing down.

So why my life history....I don't have any soft front suspension dive or bounce. Usually the bounce is due to shocks which are not correct for the application or are bad or potentially wrong front springs. On another note, these old clunkers (and that is really what they are...even though newly restored, still old technology) always have some tweaks and adjustments that are periodically necessary to maintain reliability.

Enjoy your Goat. Looks like an amazing ride which will last and can be proud of for years to come.

Take an inspection mirror and look in lower spring perches on the front end and look for dropped nuts and bolts.

Very nice car. Nothing to do with the front end bounce, but looking at the trailing arm bushings, might need and inspection/replacement. How about a nice hi res front end shot (underneath)?

I wish I had something constructive to add to re: your questions. But I had to reply.... damn dude - nice job. That is a fine looking ride. I love the way to chrome brings out the color...just beautiful.

Wow, gorgeous car! Like has been said before, "start with the easy stuff first", and for the symptoms you mentioned I'd say that would mean new shocks in front, with stiffer valving than what you have now.
