Value

I have been shopping for a GTO for some time. I found a clean 4 speed convertible. Non matching #'s, which I dont care about. But it was an automatic that has been converted to a 4 speed. It was a good job, but worried about resale value. It is real 24267. Any one have an opinion on how much the conversion hurts value? Does it put it a clone status? Thanks

Welcome to the forum !!!
Not a clone. That applies to Lemans and Tempest's in GTO clothing. You indicate this is a real 242 car. A modification such as the auto to manual is reversible, if so desired, without much metal work. The hole in the floor is the only welding that would be needed. Since it's not numbers matching already, the only reason I can see for a decrease in value is that a potential buyer may prefer the auto. Are you looking to flip it or keep it for a while. If keeping and you like the 4 speed (my preference too..) then don't worry about the resale now. Buy it and enjoy...

Thanks Mitch. That was my thought as well. Great to have the reinforcement. I do intend to drive and hold onto, at least until I have to start paying for college for kids. Apprectiate the feedback!

I agree with Mitch on this........it's a reversable modification, and most purists would rather row-their-own. If you like the car, don't let the switch hang you up........

That puts me at ease. Appreciate it guys. Since this site has such fantastic response I am going to throw another one at you. The car did not come with a tach obviously, so a sunmark was thrown into the far right opening, which i think would have been the clock? I have found an OE used tach. Any idea how big a job it would be to take out the aftermarket tach, move the gauge that's at right center to the right outer, and install the OE tach center right where I assume it belongs. I will try to figure out how ot attach pictures. Thanks

Who knows what has been altered to mount the Sun to the panel from behind. It may not be possible to reverse the damage without replacing the bezel. If the Sun is in nice condition and works, I think I would leave it. A clean install of a vintage tach from "the day" is cool in my book.

Flyboy: factory tach equipped GTO's from '65-'67 had a special Rally Gauge option, that was unlike the standard cluster. Fuel, charging, temp, all are in different locations. Later than '68, not sure. In '67, you could have a Rally Dash with tach in dash, or the regular dash with clock and a HOOD TACH. Hood tach's were available from '67 on up. I'm with Mitch: restore the original dash and have a period aftermarket Sun or Dixco hanging on the column. If not, then the vendors have complete ralley gauge clusters for some $$$. Good luck.
