I just purchased a 70 GTO and my car has the 400 emblems on the lower rocker panel behind the front wheels. I've been looking at a lot of pics of other GTOs of this year and they don't have the emblems. Can someone tell me why the difference? Thanks
The GTO never came with the "400" or "455" emblems on the rocker trim. Those rocker trim panels would have been from a LeMans or Tempest, as they have the lettering on them.
The 70 GTO was the first GTO to use the decal badges instead of the cast ones.
On the 70 GTO, there are 4 GTO badges on the outside of the car. There is one in the left grille, which is a cast piece with the inside of the letters painted white.
There is one decal badge on each front fender and one on the right side of the trunk lid. No other badges are on outside of the car.
The decal badges came in three colors, white, black and red. The decal color was dictated by the exterior color of the car. I have not yet found a source that shows which color decal came with which color car.
On my 70, it does not even say Pontiac anywhere on the outside of the car. The only place it says Pontiac is on the filler plate on the instrument panel where the a/c vent would be if it was an a/c equipped car.
So, to sum everything up, you have rocker mouldings off a LeMans or Tempest, not a GTO.
Hope this helps.
