It‟s pretty notable when you have an annual event that‟s been successful enough to keep coming back 22 times.
Tom Wilhite of our Club has chaired this event since it‟s beginning. He and his team seem to effortlessly bring it all together for that 1st weekend in October. By Tech Session night & Car Show/Drag day, eve-ryone in the Club is involved.
This year, the agenda for Friday night is really loaded up with a high horsepower program.
The Godfather of the GTO-Jim Wangers, will once again grace our Uprising and give a presentation centered around our beloved Wide Track Pontiacs. There‟s not many of these „60‟s era Icons and we need to soak in all these “first hand” experiences so we can to carry the Pontiac story forward. You can‟t get any more “first hand” then one of the key Pontiac people of the time. Jim was there and heavily involved on a daily basis to make Pontiac number one! His personal involvement helped cata-pult Pontiac from ho-hum to major Pontiac Excitement in the 60‟s!
The name Lunati instantly brings to mind camshafts. There is much more to Lunati as they actually manufacture several engine components of the highest quality using cutting edge technology.
It was founded in the late 60‟s by long time drag racer Joe Lunati. So successful, it was later bought by Holley Carburetors. In 2007 a group of racing veterans bought the company and rededicated the “new Lunati” to being a racer friendly business offering information, personal service and cutting edge racing products at an affordable price.
Lunati will be on hand to give us an overview of the many engine components they offer the racer and engine builder.
Lunati isn‟t just cams. They offer cranks, rotating assemblies, valve train components and engine kits. Look forward to hearing and learning more about the “new Lunati”.
We top off the evening with a rare Pontiac racing treat. Tom has assembled a first gathering, for a panel discussion, centered around the AHRA Record holding „58 Fuel Injected Pontiac Chieftain.
Panel members are the original owner, the dealer and the original race driver! We get to hear Pontiac Racing history first hand!
Bring your checkbooks and wear your lucky socks because we‟ll close the evening with a Silent Auc-tion and Sponsor “giveaways”. Door prizes and light eats/drinks will be on hand.
Saturday morning starts at Kansas International Dragway (K.I.D.) with an all Pontiac Car Show and a full day of Pontiac only drag racing.
Don‟t worry about stopping for breakfast on the way to K.I.D., the Young Marine’s will offer breakfast at the track. Bring your appetite so they can sell out.
The racing will be fast and all day with the track opening at 7:30 am and Time Trials starting at 8:30 am.
The Car Show starts at 9 am with Judging at Noon. There are awards presented at 3 pm that coincides with the Car Show Parade down the track. We guarantee, you will be viewing some gorgeous finely presented Pontiacs.
The day ends with the Racing Finalists after the Car Show Parade.
Not only can you look forward to Jim Wangers, but this year Past President/Board Member Bob Alexander and GTOAA Membership Coordinator/Board Member Beth Butcher will be attending the Uprising experience. Give them a GR-RRR 8’R Wichita GtO club welcome.
We‟ll see you at the Clarion Inn & Suites in Wichita Oct. 7th!!! Come early-enjoy the Bench Racing.
Be ready for some real PONTIAC-ACTION!!!
