battery connected backwards

2005 GTO batteryou connected backwards for a few seconds the negative terminal got red hot, switched it back to normal and started car back up , let it idle for 10 mins (said check alternator on dash) after 10 minstrel of idling the alternator started smoking... should I new alternator +alternator wire+fuses fix the problem?
