How much is too much

Can someone that knows please tell me a how much power the stock trans. and rear can take? I have a '04 and im just trying to figure out the best way to put my money towards a reliable, more than stock rwhp gto.

Without doing anything to the tranny, I know it's safe for 400 rwhp. That's heads, cam, headers, exhaust and intake. I've heard of people putting 600 rwhp through it, but I've never seen one. Anyone that I know of that goes to the point of getting 600 rwhp out of an LS1 usually beefs the tranny up, auto or manual.
