IIRC that is a one year only socket. Also used for the rear side marker lights. I have never seen one outside a 68 Pontiac, or even reproduced. The socket retainer is very fragile and often pulls out of the socket.
You may be able to use one from a 69-72 or a generic socket at your FLAPS.
Greetings Scott - I was messing around under my dash and the white socket/small bulb w/ single black wire (shown in your picture 1) dropped down as I was wriggling back out.....any clue to where this came from so I can try and get it put back would be appreciated.
Surveyed schematics and don't find a match for a single black wire to a bulb.
x2 that sounds like the fiber optic for the ash tray
its the easy one to knock out of the cluster
also in 68
we had a lighted ignition switch option
and it came from the other upper corner of the housing
down to the ignition switch

Update - that was it! I really appreciate the help. I had to drop the steering column to get my arm up there though....
