C-5 Z06 or C-6 Vette?

I'm really gettin the itch for a vette and I've been comparing some prices. I can get a nice C-5 Z06 for about the same price as an 05-06 C-6. They have close to the same power output......

What do you guys think?

C5 Z06.

Getting a C6 is kinda like getting a Mustang. Not performance wise but you will see them everywhere. Sure you'll see C5 Vette's too but less of them will be Z06's.

I am living your problem.

Here's what I came up with.

C5 Z06 is more on par with the straightline performance of the LS3 C6. The LS2 C6 is about a 1/2 second slower.

The C5 Z06 is about equal with the C6 with the Z51 for handling and braking with a slight edge to the C5 Z06.

I just took a trip in my C5 and got 31 mpg driving 80 mph on the FL turnpike to Ft. Lauderdale. I came back rt 27 and it's a nice 4 lane with 55-65 mph speed limits and I ran about 5 over and got 34 mpg. My C6 would get about 30 hwy so the C5 gets better fuel economy.

The C6 looks much better. The interior of the C6 is nicer. The seats are a bit better in the C6. The C6 has run flats. The C5 Z06 has a bottle of fix a flat stuff and a compressor and no run flats. If you take trips you'll miss the run flats. A GTO spare will work as a spare tire. in a pinch. I carry a hole repair kit and a small jack to lift the car so I can plug a hole in an emergency.

The console of the C5 Z06 has no insulation so you cook your right leg. I used a dynamat and reduced the noise and the heat but it's still a bit warm on long trips. Also the C5 is definately noisier. I have an interior blocker that is blocking noise from the rear and as previously mentioned I dynamated a bunch of areas, but it is still noisier than the C6.

I got my C5 Z06 with, I think it was 36 or 37,000 miles and it was a one owner car for 24k. You can find them now for about the same price. I haven't found any C6's that cheap unless they have a bunch more miles.

You really need to watch the C5 Z06. A lot of people bought them for racing. I found one with 24,000 miles and it had EBC green stuff brake pads and the rotors were changed. The tires were the second set at least and they were a good bit of the way through. It was a track day car and scared the heck out of me.

Look for the clutch on the C5 Z06 to be an issue. If you drive it hard for a bit and the clutch pedal starts sticking you will need a clutch soon. Mine is still stock original, but the guy that owned mine didn't race it at all. 40-50k is about all for a C5 Z06 clutch that has seen some racing action.

All in all I'm happier with the C5 Z06, but it's so close that I could say it's half a dozen of one and 6 of the other.

Save $$$$ for a C6 Z06.

A regular C6 is a dime a dozen.

Garage
The LS-3 has a better powerband then the C-5 Z06, C-5 is a higher RPM power range motor. Also, the C-5 Z06 only comes as an FRC-fixed roof coupe, and 6 speed manual. While you can get a 430 HP LS-3 with an auto in a convertible. I prefer the look of the C-5, because I have one, 99 Coupe, LS-1. A C-5 Z06 was probably driven pretty hard, unless you get it from an enthusiast, while you can find a pampered C-6 easier.
Mods on Vettes don't increase value, so if you want one with bolt ons, you won't really have to pay much more to get all the good stuff, but it may be hurt. I like auto cars because you don't have to buy clutches, and the trans is pretty bullet proof.
My car gets 28 MPG highway at 70, 25 at 90.

Thanks guys,
I've been thinking about this for a while and I have noticed how many vettes I see. C-5 and C-6's
I do like the fact that you do not see as many goats....

I guess I'll spend some more time researching for the "right one" if that exists.

I would get the C5 Z06. That was next on my list to buy because I wanted a track car. Plans changed I'm looking to get a truck.
